CLOTHS OF HEAVEN
Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Gwynne, Yes another one I like, it needs to be spoken rather than read, especially lines three and four.

A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns
My love is like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June : My love is like the melody That’s sweetly played in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in love am I : And I will love thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry. Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun : And I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only love, And fare thee weel a while ! And I will come again, my love, Thou’ it were ten thousand mile.

Elizabethofseasons - the Elizabeth Browning is a particular favourite of ours. This is another...
Beauty and love are all my dream; They change not with the changing day; Love stays forever like a stream That flows but never flows away;
And beauty is the bright sun-bow That blossoms on the spray that showers Where the loud water falls below, Making a wind among the flowers.

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God. But let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.
The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran

SYMPTOMS OF LOVE Robert Graves 1895 – 1985
Love is a universal migraine, A bright stain on the vision Blotting out reason.
Symptoms of true love Are leanness, jealousy, Laggard dawns;
Are omens and nightmares – Listening for a knock Waiting for a sign
For the touch of her fingers In a darkened room, For a searching look.
Take courage, lover! Can you endure such grief At any hand but hers?

STRAWBERRIES Edwin Morgan 1920 –
There were never strawberries like the ones we had that sultry afternoon sitting on the step of the open french window facing each other your knees held in mine the blue plates on our laps the strawberries glistening in the hot sunlight we dipped them in sugar looking at each other not hurrying the feast for one to come the empty plates laid on the stone together with the two forks crossed and I bent towards you sweet in the air in my arms abandoned like a child from your eager mouth the taste of the strawberries in my memory lean back again let me love you
let the sun beat on our forgetfulness one hour of all the heat intense and summer lightning on the Kilpatrick hills
let the storm wash the plates

AnninGlos, yes it was a reading at my Son's wedding - all the guest received a copy of it printed on a roll of parchment tied with a ribbon. Lovely keepsake.

Dear All
Enjoying your thread lots, Mrs Ann in Glos.
Hello to Mr Sheep and Mrs Joeva, I love your poems. :-)
I am enjoying reading the poetry on here much more than I did at school.
I really disliked standing up in front of the class and reading out loud, parts from the books or plays. Horrible!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is one of the most well-known by William Shakespeare.
SONNET NO: 18
Shall I compare thee to a summers day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Take gentle care Best wishes all Elizabeth, EOS xx

I always think that Shakespeare was wasted on school children, I didn't understand him until I was an adult. And I like that poem too.b

This is from one of my favourite singers....... Muffy and Kay dont look lol im going all slushy :-D ;-)
When I look into your eyes It's like watching the night sky Or a beautiful sunrise Well, there's so much they hold And just like them old stars I see that you've come so far To be right where you are How old is your soul?
Well, I won't give up on us Even if the skies get rough I'm giving you all my love I'm still looking up
And when you're needing your space To do some navigating I'll be here patiently waiting To see what you find
'Cause even the stars they burn Some even fall to the earth We've got a lot to learn God knows we're worth it No, I won't give up
I don't wanna be someone who walks away so easily I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use The tools and gifts we got, yeah, we got a lot at stake And in the end, you're still my friend at least we did intend For us to work we didn't break, we didn't burn We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in I had to learn what I've got, and what I'm not, and who I am
I won't give up on us Even if the skies get rough I'm giving you all my love I'm still looking up, still looking up.
Well, I won't give up on us (no I'm not giving up) God knows I'm tough enough (I am tough, I am loved) We've got a lot to learn (we're alive, we are loved) God knows we're worth it (and we're worth it)
I won't give up on us Even if the skies get rough I'm giving you all my love I'm still looking up <3 <3

IF YOU SAID
If you said you were cold. I would wrap my arms around you. If you said you were thirsty I would give you the ocean blue. I would give you anything the moon, the stars, the sunset too. This heart in my hands I hold out to you.
