Hi All,
We are thinking about having a 1970’s dinner party.

Starters and puddings don’t seem to be a problem and Black Tower and Mateus Rose are still around, but the main course is the problem as one of the guests (rather a meat and two veg person) is not keen on dishes in sauce so Chicken chasseur, spaghetti bolognaise and Coq au vin are out. Both my wife an I hate garlic so no Chicken Kiev either!

Crown roast is one possibility, or Ring of Mince, however I guess a bucket of KFC would be cheating somewhat! So any ideas please?

I have a Fanny Craddock cookery book downstairs.

Will have alook in it when I go downstairs to see if there is something in there to inspire you. I know she bakes something in a big heap of salt which she keeps especially to do this.

Prawn cocktail

Steak - grilled (option of sauce) served with roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, cauliflower (no fancy veg then).

Pavlova and/or

Black Forest Trifle - very yummy and a change from the gateau

Cheese Board

Wine - can only recall Hock/Blue Nun.

Used to have a lot of parties in the 70's.

They were nearly all where you took a bottle...lot of those already mentioned...for a red wine ...Bulls blood...

Glad you mentioned prawn cocktails ,cos that was a favourite starter although one of our favourites was Dublin Bay prawns with tartare sauce and delicate pieces of brown bread and butter...Living by the sea we also had scallops. Which were called queenies as a bed of them was found nearby and the foreign lorries were waiting at the quay to whisk them off to the continent.

Remember going out in more long dresses for every occasion,but did have some big flare trousers...what about hot pants...they were in the 70's as well.
Flower power as well!

Used to wear what we called hostess gowns, I.e. long informal dresses, some with buttons down the front in bright designs, or maxi skirts.

Used to eat steak and chips or scampi, but we also used to have fun with a steak fondue.

I went to a Pippa Dee party and fell for a 'granny style' nightie, I wore it several times as a dress until dancing at a dinner dance OH asked me why wouldn't I tell people where I bought it!!!!

When I admitted it was a nightie was the last time it appeared in public!! I was very nearly taken home early.

There were cat suits (Abba style), trouser suits (I have a silk one) friend used the top as a mini dress! Midi dresses. A lot were bright colours. Same colour shirts and ties for men - saw pink shirts for the first time.
