GinN Report 18 May 2013 16:28

Going into pubs without that awful smoke is a real pleasure now, no more coming home stinking like an ash tray.
I think the real reason that so many pubs are closing is the cost of the drinks, soft ones included. If duty on drinks sold in licensed premises was reduced, it might encourage more to return. It's cheaper to drink at home, but going out to a pub is a social pleasure.

Ive stopped going in pubs since the smoking ban, I couldnt cope with the smell of wet dog and sweaty feet it was choking me :-D

Last year when we visited Prague we was having a meal and the waiter brought us an ash tray couldnt smoke in doors when anyone one else was eatting so still went outside however went in a pub afterwards and the smell of freshly lit cig was pure bliss :-D :-D :-D

JoyBoroAngel Report 18 May 2013 19:51

i think pubs smelt better of smoke
than swetty smelly bodies

bring back the ash trays :-( :-(

JustJohn Report 18 May 2013 20:24

Supermarkets waft the smell of fresh bread through the air conditioning to make you spend more.

Pubs waft BO through the vents to achieve the same effect. Makes you drink more, particularly highly scented and expensive cocktails. :-) ;-)

Urggh. In the old days, when you used to go into a bar first thing in the morning (an uncle had a pub). You could hardly see from one end of room to the other (8 hours after it had been emptied) and the stench of stale beer, stale tobacco and stale bodies was horrible. :-( :-(

Sharron Report 18 May 2013 22:47

I always think we should not give up dummies as we grow up.

If people could have a good stick in a dummy at times of stress or loneliness I think they would not need sweets or cigarettes to suck on.

Dermot Report 18 May 2013 22:54

Ashtray sales are down.

Guinevere Report 19 May 2013 06:03

I speak as a reformed smoker - I gave up 2 years ago.

The smoking ban in pubs was the death of several pub quizzes that we used to go to and that didn't help their already difficult trading situation.

I miss the social chit-chat in pub gardens with other smokers, I'm with Muffy on that. Smokers are often very entertaining company.

Good luck, Muffy, start planning what you are going to do with the money you saved.

Sharron Report 19 May 2013 09:48

I don't think the argument was that smoking keeps you thin but that thin was superior even if it was belching out fumes.

The thought went somewhere along these lines.

" I deal with my terrible problems and stresses in a most sophisticated and legal way,I smoke. Yes,it does send smelly smoke over a large area and it does make me smell of smoke but it is a superior and sophisticated smell.

That man talking loudly over there? Yes,he drinks too much to deal with his overwhelmingly awful stresses and problems. It does pay quite a lot of revenue to the chancwllor so it is,of course socially acceptable and it is quite a sophisticated way to relax.Well, tes,he does sometimes get a bit nasty with his family and also, sometimes has to urinate on the pavement but he always makes sure he lies down further on to sober up.

But you, you despicaly inadequate individual. You deal with the stresses and problems you imagine you might have by eating too much. If you didn't wash as well as you do,that could make you smell and you take up too much room and eating has no sophistication or superiority about it whatsoever. In fact it i legal for a person of any age to do.You want to learn how to control that.Just let me light my next fag and have a swig of my drink and I will give you further advise on how to do it. If you don't like the smell of my smoke then you shouldn't go to pubs! Standing there smell free and talking quietly while you eat that packet of crisps! It's anti-social!"

~Lynda~ Report 19 May 2013 10:30

Smoke free pubs, wonderful, I can now eat in a pub, without the smell of tobacco in my food, my clothes don't smell, I don't get a sore throat, fabulous :-D

Good luck with giving up the weed Muffy, my friend has just given up, she's been a non smoker for 4 weeks, after smoking for 30 + years. She said she has wanted to give up for a while, but found it difficult socially, as other friends smoked and she was one of the go outside crew, she didn't use anything to stop smoking, just said to herself one day "this is bloody ridiculous, she's found it easy, and said smoking was just something she did because she always had.

More smoke free areas I say, so that I don't have to walk through a smog when I go in a shop where the puffers are :-D

Dermot Report 19 May 2013 16:19

UKIP is the only party that is prepared to take the UK out of the EU - according to their literature.

UKIP also want to control immigration; prevent continuous attacks on Christianity & abolish any idea of same-sex marriage.

JustJohn Report 19 May 2013 22:59

Dermot. Yes, but what is UKIP policy on key issues like bringing smoking back into pubs?

All parties have said that they want to control immigration, and I am sure they would all say that they want to defend the rights of all religious groups in UK. As far as same-sex marriage is concerned, the country and all major parties are debating that. And Tories and Libs have declared that they will work to get us out of EU if that is what we want. WHICH IT ISN'T!!!!

If Bill Cash, Nigel Farage, William Rees-Mogg and John Redwood want us out of EU, I'm for in - even if EU makes me spend euros and eat straight bananas :-)

LadyScozz Report 20 May 2013 08:19

Smoking in pubs & restaurants has been banned in Australia for some time.

Those places who want to keep customers have a smoking area outside. We've noticed that the smoking areas are full in pubs, not many sitting inside!

Most of these establishments have slot machines....and lots of them have them outside "under cover" for the smokers.

If all the smokers give up......... imagine the taxes put on other items!

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 20 May 2013 08:45

Smoking in pubs is never going to be brought back. Lets be honest, passive smoking isn't good for non smokers or non smoking bar staff.
A local free house publican made his place non smoking well before the ban was legislated for... and then complained when many of his regulars deserted him.

As adults, we rarely go to pubs solely for a drink, so it didn't/doesn't affect us too much. Even now we tend only to go out for a pub meal. If the food isn't good, then they don't get our custom again. The high tax on alcoholic drinks is probably (added - also) a strong contributory factor in the number of pubs closing.

maggiewinchester Report 20 May 2013 09:30

Before the smoking ban, pubs weren't for eating in, neither were they for children :-|

Next time you go into an old pub look at the ceiling - not the colour, the remains of beams.
I went into a pub where a g g uncle died falling down the stairs, coming out of a BUFFs meeting.
The landlord not only took me upstairs to the room, he explained, using the (now plastered) beams, how the pub used to be set out.
Walk in the front door, there were 3 further doors to choose, Lounge, Public and Smoking!
The smoking bar was seperate from everything - even the bar.
If a smoker wanted a drink, they opened a hatch to the bar, made their order, and closed the hatch. The drink was then passed through the hatch - thus ensuring very little smoke leaked into the other bars.

Simples :-D

Edit: I'm not too keen on breathng in other people's exhaust fumes - they're much more deadly than fag smoke.

Sharron Report 20 May 2013 09:40

Maggie,if you had an accident you would be taken to hospital in an exhaust belching ambulance not on a giant fag.

maggiewinchester Report 20 May 2013 13:27

Ahhh- but I can dream :-D

KenSE Report 20 May 2013 14:06

"And Tories and Libs have declared that they will work to get us out of EU if that is what we want."

John, are you saying that the other parties will ignore the results of a referendum on the EU?
