had plumber and drain man out today for bunged up toilet that was overflowing, and guess what the blockage was?

Yep..Andrex flushable toilet wipes, drain man says it's always happening..

They did this topic on the Jeremy Vine radio programme a little while ago. There were some horrendous stories about these things blocking pipes. A plumber on there said no sort of wipes should ever be put down a toilet no matter what it said on the packet.

I did mention this on another thread in the last few days - twice within a couple of months we had to call out water board - our neighbours drains back up to ours and they never ever check them.

They told next door and OH - it was baby wipes - they have three darlings 4-10 years. It was denied.

Next time - man practically shoved neighbours nose down drain according to OH and insisted it was baby/adults wipes.

We had a problem a couple of years ago where a blockage had been building up without us knowing and I noticed wet on the garage floor.OH poked a hole through the hardboard and more water came through.So out came a plumber and pulled down a load of hardwood panel to find a join in the pipe was coming apart.He pulled the pipe apart and I can't tell you the muck that fell through (poo :-S).He asked if we used wipes ,toilet wipes etc.I said yes because they were flushable.He said they might be flushable but do not dissolve ,and the only thing to put down the loo was normal toilet paper ...not even the quilted stuff !!!!.......I was so paranoid for a while and put a note by each toilet saying 'Do Not put anything down the loo unless it is just loo paper'.I have bought larger bins for the two bathrooms for the Flushable Wipes to go in.
Good idea to put this thread up Stella as I'm sure most people don't realise this is a big problem.

Also do not put those Duck cleaning pads (that grip into the end of a stick) down the loo

i am a bit cross because they had to rod the toilet from inside the house to push the blockage out so i have had lots of water to mop up.. now for the bleach and air fresheners lol....

I was poo pooed (pardon the pun) for saying wipes and cleaning pads shouldn't go down the loo.

Don't put anything in the loo unless it has been eaten first!

You do wonder what people get up to.

My cousin has a caravan and a note appeared on the toilet during the closed season listing what should not be put down the loo, the list included toothbrushes!

Me I just rinse them under the tap, too lazy to bend down all that way and do 'em in the bowl :-D :-D :-D

haha... well i have learned a lesson today.... :-S

We were away on a caravan club site last week. In the toilet block there were notices in each cubical saying "do not flush wipes down the loo as they cause blockages and it could result in the whole toilet block being closed" :-0 OH said that the same notices were in the Gents as well.

Its the first time I have seen this in 14 years of caravanning so I suppose it must be a new problem

I've had these notices in self-catering cottages way out in the country where they are attached to cesspits - and I believe there can be problems with macerator loos which often installed where there is limited access to drainage.

Even kitchen roll shouldn't be flushed down the toilet, I believe also that short flushes aren't good, most toilet designs haven't changed in years IE pipes are the same size so not designed for modern products.

i have been using them in both toilets for years with no problem..., maybe they have changed the formula of the paper?

a friend of ours had continual toilet blockages, wasn't her drain but up the road a bit and it all backed up...........the drain man finally got to the " bottom" of the problem. was PAIR of Y front pants that was the culprit!!

three or four houses up!!

cotton buds are another culprit!!

thing is these wipes are also wonderful to use on the grandchildren...lol

i shall have to buy some small bins tomorrow....

i can't imagine anyone flushing a pair of y fronts away.... :-S

I don't flush baby wipes (it says on the packet NOT to)....... but I thought the other ones were OK (it says so on the packet). No more.

As Island said....don't flush anything down the loo unless it's been eaten! That was drilled into me and my brothers when we were young.

We had a blockage in the cul de sac drains and it was found to be caused by wipes. We asked our neighbour as she had grandson to stay a lot and she was using the children's ones for him,. The Anglian Water chap said it's a problem that's on the increase. The companies who produce these wipes and call them flushable should be made to pay the bills for the pipes to be cleared out, and shown the evidence!

People managed for a long time with ordinary loo roll, why are we (collective we) suddenly unable to cope without wipes and fancy loo paper?

My cousin has a bidet (she lives in Essex).

It was in the house when they bought it. Moved in...... then realised the bidet wasn't connected! It just sits there :-D They use it.... as a magazine rack.
