I am trying to track my Grt grandfather Bn circa 1842 a Charles Carter, occ Bricklayer, marr a Mary Ann Lane nee Banksbland, I have his marr cert and he is on the 1871 census aged 29 living at 15 Upper Queen Street, Islington area, on my nans 1887 birth cert his occ is House painter, marr cert of 1906 he is deceased. I cannot find his birth or death certs or any other census records. His father is down as John Carter occ colour maker. Can any one help please.....

The image says he was born on 20 Aug, lived at Mill Row and that James was a Pen Maker. James could possibly have changed his occupation in later years.

Although Charles's birth may have been registered, it wasn't compulsory to do so until about 1876

The image of the marriage is also on Ancestry - can anyone make out the names of the witnesses? Have you followed them through to see if they are related on the Carter side?

on the 1871 census Philip Carter 9, is Philip Edward Lane, Bn 20/5/1862 5a William Street Islington father Philip Lane, Robert Carter 4, is Charles Robert Carter Bn 15/10/1867 5 Windsor Street Islington. I've track P E Lane to Mutford and Yarmouth. but have not found any more details of C R.
