Should people delete their comments in bulk from threads, which makes reading the thread hard as you've no idea what others are replying to?

I know you can't enforce no deleting etc but it is "annoying" when it happens....why write anything if you don't want others to read it?

Maybe one thinks better of what one has said and thinks it maybe went a bit too far? was a bit too sharp, thoughtless of others or was just plain obnoxious lol.

Are you certain you have never posted anything insensitive that you wish you hadn't? edit to add...and then deleted it because you realised it could cause offence? ( whether one meant to or not lol).

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 15:54

Can I guarantee it 100% no..I'm human....but if for instance "you" delete one comment that might apply...a large number...maybe "you" should learn to think before "you" type maybe?

Rambling

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2017 16:02

I think you should yes, Caroline. I know I try to. But it is not always possible when one types in haste without 'filtering' it first, and typing in haste is what I tend to do when I feel strongly, even though it is not always as coherent or reasoned as I would like it to be.

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 16:04

I see your point Nyx but it doesn't always apply. Often the comments have been researched and thought out not just quick rash replies.

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2017 16:04

and of course there is the odd incident of what I would call 'gallows humour' that is not really appropriate for public consumption, that one might be used to at home but does not sit well when out of it with strangers lol.

Using your example to keep everything flowing they could add a comment explaining why they'd like to change what they wrote earlier, thereby leaving it clear why others followed and said what they said. Otherwise the whole thread might as well be removed as they often don't make sense after the bulk deleting.

Rambling

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2017 16:10

Maybe, but I really don't have trouble following even when things are removed, I just go back to the original post and go from there :-)

My thoughts on a topic really aren't reliant on what anyone else has said, or unsaid :-)

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 16:14

But that's not always true...if someone has missed the removed comments and only reads the reply they often have no idea what's being discussed.

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2017 16:23

I suppose, but that doesn't stop anyone picking up the threads of the thread surely? Just ignore what or who isn't there and go with something more substantial, or respond to those posts that appeared before the deletion.
:-D

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 16:25

Sorry but not always true...or is it just me??

Rambling

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2017 16:36

#shrugs lol. who knows, maybe I'm just the odd one out...nothing new there then :-)

Kense

Kense Report 18 Jun 2017 16:37

Does it really matter Caroline? This is only a message board used by a few people. I don't think much posted on here is going to have any real effect on anything.

I was going to post this on the GE thread but here it is more on topic. If you copy and paste from someone's post, which they subsequently delete, then we only have your word that it is correct. I am sure you wouldn't misuse quoting like that but others might.

Another thing to beware of is quoting someone who has made an offensive statement (e.g .using a non-PC word) then your post is also offensive.

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 16:48

No Kense in the whole scale of things it doesn't matter, but it's a general chat board added to by a few but read by many. Nothing on here is ever going to change the world but it's a place for people to put their views sometimes light heartedly sometimes not.
Personally I only c/p when I think it might be removed but now it's been learnt all you need to do is RR. I've never seen anyone ever say someone has made up the c/p but I suppose it's possible but would be questioned by the original poster.

No disputing the odd deletion here and there but it is very annoying when they appear several times and make following the thread difficult

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 16:56

The whole point is to and fro of comments eg a conversation albeit on the boards......take away one side and you have rantings of a mad person talking to themselves. Now some will say that's all some of us ever do but that would be their mistake.... :-D :-D

Rambling

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2017 16:59

I don't mind talking to myself, sometimes it's the only way I get an intelligent conversation ;-)

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 18 Jun 2017 17:03

Same here Nyx ;-) :-D

maggiewinchester Report 18 Jun 2017 17:05

I suppose it doesn't matter in the real world.
Just seems utterly cowardly to rant on about something - throwing insults left, right and centre, putting people down in the process (and possibly upsetting them), then deleting everything, only to pop up again a few hours/days later with a 'who me' (usually with a thinly disguised insult) as if nothing has happened. :-|

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Jun 2017 17:21

Agreed Maggie.....LaGooner and Nyx not sure if I should feel sorry for you both or not :-D :-D
