Hello DC - you are more than welcome on this thread! The statement is basically to say what support your child should receive over and above that provided to 'normal' mainstream kids. It also ensures that the school receives funds to cover this support. If the statement is not being adhered to, then you should first of all WRITE to the head teacher querying this. If you get no satisfactory response then write to your LEA. I say write, so that there is a clear record of your question - also you must ask them to confirm anything that they say 'in writing'. Have a look at the website that Penny (Ken) has quoted below too. Good luck and feel free to post here as often as you like! Maz. XX

My son is statmented and he gets a helper 3 full days a week and twice a year they look at the statment to see how things are going and they will be checking before he goes to high school so they get help for him there to and the school gets extra money towards the helper so if you are not getting the help get on to the school and the education board as I get a letter out lining what help he gets

Hi Val, your sons statement should have written in it what your son should be recieving in school, the school are bound to give your son exactly what it documented in his statement, if you know this is not the case then you must query it, go to the CAF link I mentioned earlier and phone them to ask there advice, they will tell you exactly what to put in a letter Contact a Family, 209-211 City Road, London EC1V 1JN Tel: 020 7608 8700 Fax: 020 7608 8701 Helpline 0808 808 3555 or Textphone 0808 808 3556 Freephone for parents and families (10am-4pm, Mon-Fri) Good luck, get back to us and let us know how it goes.

I am getting the hours the statement said it is, they will have to check before he goes to high school so he gets help there as they have to transfer it over so it remains in place he has 3 days help at the moment but they don't know how the change will affect him as he will be moving from class to class with different teachers all the time

Val, it sounds to me as if he needs a change in his statement if the support is not working - maybe he needs someone with him full time. When was the statement last reviewed? You should attend a review meeting yearly with the SENCO and his class teacher and LSA. Maybe he needs a new assessment, which would recommend that he receives more help. It is, as you say, really important to get this sorted out now in preparation for him going to secondary school. Maz. XX

Val Report 18 Feb 2005 18:11

I received the letter begining of week but they said they would have another look before summer holidays as he goes to high school after summer holidays so we will see I am not sure if he will be able to cope with all the different teachers he only has 4 at the moment and still gets him self in trouble he has a helper Tuesday to Thursday as that is the hours they have given him 556 per anum

Hi Val, if I m not mistaken the statement your son has at the present school might change as he goes to another school, what is in the statement at present only applies to the present school named in the statement so you may find he will get assessed again, they may feel he needs more support, you must discuss this, good luck with his school move, its quick a distressing time for kids like ours not only a new school but new teachers and pupils, lets hope they support you in his move and make it less distressing for him. Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 19 Feb 2005 14:03

A statement is supposed to be reviewed extra carefully before kids go to secondary for just the reasons you state. Some statements will even specify which school the child should attend. You need to insist that this is done - go to the LEA Special Needs (or similar) department. Maz. XX

Here is some very welcome advice from Bernice ....... Original Added by Bernice Scott on 19/02/2005 14:16:55 Autistic, Aspergers, Special Needs etc...For VAL I have read the thread entitled Autistic Spectrum and I would like to clarify a few things. I work for the LEA writing Statements and overseeing the statutory process when a referral is made. A statement should be reviewed annually by the school (Annual Review) to see if the needs of the child are being met through the IEP (individual education plan). If the child is not meeting the objectives on the statement or having their needs met then it needs to be amended with input from SENCO, Parent/Carers, any other professional involved i.e. Speech & language, Occ Therapy, Physio etc. When the Annual review has been undertaken a form should be filled in by the school and sent to the AEN dept of the LEA. The assessment officer will amend the statement accordingly. If a child is transfering to secondary school, the year 5 annual review is extremely important as the next school needs to know what that childs individual needs are. I suggest that if you are not happy with the support your child is or isn't receiving, contact the school and then if no luck phone the LEA. I hope this helps. Bernie xx Maz. XX
