The marriage cannot be ruled out completely for Jaqueline as the poster say she went down south maybe London to live. Did you say she lived with her Grandmother also on her Mother or Fathers side ?

patchem Report 26 Feb 2012 23:51

Just realised you said Charles died in the services.

The 'possible' marriage for Jacqueline was to Cannata.
There is a Jacqueline Cannata on facebook, but no public information visible.
She and husband show on 192.com for 2002 in Braintree.

Their son is on 192.com for this year;

The death certificate for Irene Townend has to be her - my ister said it was when she was leaving school and thinks it was about May time.

Peter

Peter Report 27 Feb 2012 00:05

I'm not sure which grandmother Jacqueline stayed with - this information was given by my mother.

Sheila

Sheila Report 27 Feb 2012 00:11

If the is nothing from the other leads I sent then maybe it could be worth ordering the death cert for Irene to see who the informant was.

Peter

Peter Report 27 Feb 2012 00:19

The informant was her husband John Townend.

Maybe you should think laterally as we seem to be having limited success. I can see that the Charlie born Dewsbury appears to be an only child, but I wonder about Irene. If you can trace descendants of any siblings she had there might be clues. Other family members often know something. My father and his sister were orphaned in the 30's, and when I tracked down some relatives they had family stories about the children whose parents died young, and even a couple of photos of my father which I didn't have. This story had filtered down the years.

This link covers the cottage homes and could be where the children were sent. According to this the children's home was under the control of the local authority, I wonder if it is worth contacting the local social services for help? They usually keep records in archive and may be able to shed some light on what happened to them.

Just to add.

There is a tree on Ancestry which includes a Charlie B. Wells born 1917 who married in Warwickshire 1947. They have no parents for him and no birth record is attached - the birth is put as Nuneaton, but this might be an assumption. They have this death. I have urged Peter to get the Dewsbury birth cert to check birthdate, just to be sure he didn't just move away. I think it needs to be excluded if nothing else.

Name: Charlie B Wells
Birth: 29 Oct 1917
Death: Jun 1990 - Nuneaton and Bedworth, Warwickshire, England

Might this be the death of Irene's husband? I wonder who registered it?

Definitely going to look at the birth certificate for Charlie B Wells, like you say if only to rule it out. I would really like to conentrate on finding info about Charlie, Peter (or Derek) and Jacqueline. My father is particularly interested to find out about his siblings. I think contacting the local authority for any records of the home is an idea I certainly will try. All you helpers are amazing to give up your time like this, I cannot thank you enough.

I agree it is important not to lose the focus, but sometimes you have to go sideways a bit!

Have you ever tried contacting neighbours of your grandmother? I assume you have an address on the death cert. This can be searched on Friends Reunited. People often share info with friends & neighbours, certainly worth a try, and easy to do.

I wonder if it is worth checking out all the Derek R. Wells on 192.com, again if only to exclude them? There are only 9. One is Derek Robert in his 60's so I would start with him. You might be in for the long haul with this one don't you think?

I wonder if you would have more luck trying to find Irene's siblings - there are 6 other Watson/Calvert births in Dewsbury 1913-1927 who could be connected.

It's just there is some doubt about Charlie - originally thought to have died overseas?

Peter

Peter Report 27 Feb 2012 10:52

I think it's safe to say I cannot rely on my fathers memories and need to look at everything. - like u say a few steps sideways may just help me make 1 step forward.

Thanks Liz.

The reason for this was there are a number of Watson/Calvert births, but the only local marriage I can see is 1902 between Mark Watson and Jane Calvert - so wanted to see if there were earlier children than Alice 1913. The last Watson/Calvert child in Dewsbury was 1927, and Jane would have still been young enough.

Flip

Flip Report 27 Feb 2012 12:34

A possible lead, a member on here (Debbie) has Laura & Alice Watson in her tree along with Mark Watson & Jane Calvert - it is only a slim chance but could be worth trying to contact her. You need to search trees for Laura (1904), there's only a few results.

If the family for Irene is correct, her youngest sister would be Emma J born 1927, there is a marriage in Spen Valley 1946 to Alderwin Stead. She died in 1991 (right birth year) and he died 1993 (born 1920), both reg Dewsbury. It looks like they had 3 children, will pm the details as one married an unusual name and I think is in the Dewsbury/Batley phone book and also on 192.com
