ArgyllGran Report 25 May 2014 14:15

The Townsville daily bulletin, in which MarieCeleste found the Roll of Honour mention of John Harold Horwood (the image shows his parents as Mr & Mrs J Fury, not I Fury as in the transcription) also has a further insertion in his honour, inserted by "his aunt and uncle, T and F Gleeson".

So the marriage of Fanny Horwood to Thomas Gleeson, which I posted on page 1, is correct.

Note "Mr and Mrs J Fury and family" in this funeral notice. Of course, John Harold was still alive at that time.

Took note about the Betty Fury topic. Re the funeral of Charlotte Horwood, I see it states Mr & Mrs J Fury and family so that must have been children John and Betty. I have been on the Peter Dunn World at War site, this evening. It was through Peter Dunn that I found the names of the other crew members 14 yrs ago ('that's how long I have been looking for families of the crew) and I noticed he was born in Townsville in 1948 so have contacted him in hope that he may have known the Horwoods, Fury or Jones families Jones being the married name of Betty Fury . Never know if Betty had children Peter Dunn may have gone to school with one of them. Regards John.

Hi ArgyllGran. I went on the site - recordsearch. naa.gov.au - to find out more about John and it looks like he lived with his Aunt Miss Elizabeth Rebecca Horwood. Take a look and you will be find it most interesting. It certainly cleared one thing up for me, I wondered why the crew were buried on the 25thJune, 13 days after the crash but reading the info on this site, it appears only my dad R L Lewis was buried then because he was found later under the aircraft, presume when they started taking the wreckage away. For a while they mentioned only 6 crew and the mother of John thought he was a POW, I expect because my dad's body had not been recovered until later and of course the uncertainty until after the war when more information came to light . Take a look AG. Regards John
