Hi everyone Serves me right for bragging about finishing my piece. My co-ordinator, Carol is sending me 2 discs next! lol Actually it's not as bad as it seems. My 15 year old, Rosie, has been taking an interest in what I've been doing so she said if I show her the ropes she'll do a bit. Bless! Jeanette

Hi guys! Have started transcribing vessels - not too difficult although I discovered I'd put the vessel's name in the wrong place! However - quick question - when you can't read a name what do you put? I've been putting a question mark where there is a letter I can't read. I'm sure that's not right! Any suggestions (please)? Jan

Hi Jan, Put a hyphen for anything you can't read and then an x in the next query column. My coordinator didn't like the use of question marks at all. Rick.

Rick thanks! At least I was getting the x right! Just to be absolutely clear - I put a hyphen instead of the name, or in place of letters I can't read? Jan

Rick Report 3 Jun 2004 16:23

Hi Jan, I put it instead of the whole name on the advice of my coordinator. She didn't seem to approve of putting some letters and either question marks or hyphens in the gaps. She also didn't like anything in the comments column to explain either. Don't know if this is her personal preference or a general thing, but she did say they were updating the instructions. It makes it a lot quicker to transcribe though if you do what she said ! Rick.

Rick My co-ordinator said I could leave the explanation column blank if I wanted. The reason for this being that the co-ordinators have to delete it all, so obviously your co-ordinator doesn't like you to make a lot of work for her! lol Sometimes though I feel it's necessary to put an explanation. Hi, I would have thought an explanation would be easier for the checker to look at the problem. I think it all gets checked again another 2x. Youre best doing what your coordinator thinks is right I suppose.

Now Iam worried about adding in the comments column, since reading your replies I have been adding comments so do I take it that Carol--as she is my co-ordinator too doesn't see the need to add a comment and just put in the x? I think I may ring her or send her what I have done up to now. Worried from Darlington!!!

I wouldnt worry Ann. Carol has told me to write an explanation to a query I had. I have continued to do it for anything I'm not certain of.

Same here Jo Ann Carol is my co-ordinator too. She told me that it wasn't absolutely necessary to write in the comments column if I didn't want to. But I have continued to do so as I feel that most times it is necessary - especially if you have more than one query per batch of columns (hope that makes sense!). I will carry on putting comments in column Y until I am told otherwise. Jeanette

Hi guys! Yes, I've done 9 vessels (all on separate pages) and sent them off and Carol has made just a few changes! What a relief! Shame it's back to work next week - won't get much done now. Before you all think I must be doing loads of work - most vessels so far have only had two or three names to enter! Jan

Hi All you freecener's!!!! The ones who have sent off there first finished disc did you put your transcription on to a disc to send off ---this sounds confusing I know. I mean did you copy it on to a disc? Ann

Morning Ann No I didn't. I sent mine as an attachment to an email to Carol. I still have it on my computer though just incase of any cock ups. I don't want to have to type that lot again! lol. When my next discs come I will transfer it off my computer just in case. Do we take it you've finished yours then Ann? Jeanette

Hi Ann, Well done if you've finished!! (Big pat on the back!!) I sent mine as an attachment to an email too, and have kept it on the computer (just in case). I'm still waiting for my next discs - 8 weeks now!! So I'm doing some transcribing for BMD - after the census it's a doddle!! Von

}((((*> Jeanette The Haddock <*)))){ Report 10 Jun 2004 12:38

Hi Von Do we really have to wait that long for our next discs? I knew there was a bit of a backlog but I didn't realise it would be so long. I'm getting withdrawl symptoms! lol. I'm doing some transcribing for YorkshireBMD in the meantime and that's a doddle too. So much so that I seem to be requesting more transcriptions every other day. Bet they're sick of me at Leeds register office! lol Jeanette

~Von~ Report 10 Jun 2004 13:01

Hi Jeanette, I ordered my second disc when I sent off the transcription of the first disc. After 5 weeks I contacted my co-ordinator who checked to make sure the disc was on order. He said there was a backlog of several weeks so I asked him to order another one for me thinking the second one would come soon and I'd have finished it before the third one arrived!!!! And I'm still waiting!! I think I was getting withdrawal symptoms so decided to do some for BMD - I've almost finished my second batch - they are so quick to do from a typed sheet and not much deciphering to do!! Might take me longer from the hand-written sheets though. Von
