I had a very frustrating time at the library yesterday. I'm transcribing from fiche (hence the library visit) for South Shields vessels. Obvioulsy some are from other countries which means a lot of foreign names. That's OK when you can read them, but the handwriting!!! Arrrrggghhh! I had to admit defeat with some of them - there was no way of even guessing what the names could be. Oh well, the joys of transcribing... By the way Jeanette, there are 100 images on each fiche!

Jan 100? Blinking Heck! What do you do then, sit and write them all out by hand then type them up when you get home? Is this your first piece? I bet your wishing you never volunteered! lol. It's bad enough trying to read the English names so it must be very difficult doing foreign ones. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. Jeanette

Jeanette Off the top of my head I can't think of anything useful, unless next time you want to siton my shoulder and whisper words of encouragement?!! Yes it's my first piece - each vessel has its own page which helps - at least I know when I get to the end there's hope that the next chap's handwriting will be readable! Anyway it's fun, it's free and keeps me out of mischief for a couple of hours. Jan

Hi Jo Try putting quotation marks " first. I had the same problem trying to enter the forename May cos it is a month of the year too. So I typed "May and it worked. Jeanette

Thanks Jeanette, it worked. Did you have to leave the " in it?

Unknown Report 25 Jun 2004 12:59

Just playing... but if I put a space then - it worked too. Thanks for your help, Jo.

I did some ships today at the library - some beautiful handwriting but....so hard to read!! Especially in Spanish, Danish, Russian etc. Forgot to put page numbers on last lot I sent to Carol so thought I'd better find them - guess what? Found a page I'd missed, one on the extreme right of the fiche! Oops!!

Jeanette & Jo - unfortunately I understood every word you said. Booking the appointment with the therapist first thing in the morning. Rick.

I'm toddling along slowly with Tyne Dock - another visit to the library might finish the fiche I'm working on! It really is slow - having to transcribe them by hand and type them up is a nightmare - must be poor eyesight and advancing years (my excuse anyway!) Thanks for the offer Jo - not sure what you could do even if you were here and not up north!
