Maybe Wentworth is the wrong place!?

There are many "wrong" birth places on the various censuses, just as there are wrong spellings of names, etc.

Daniel Report 4 Sep 2007 21:59

Maybe sylvia, it's possible, it definatley says Wentworth Yorkshire, and there is a real village called Wentworth in Yorkshire. Also the census which says that is a Welsh one so it's no as if they have jsut copied from the village name or something. She is only person on that census with that place of birth.

I know it's probably a T but what about a Y or a J ???

Has it been mistranscribed?

However ............ who gave the census taker the information??

It may have been Eliza, or a member of her family ............ and she might have told them "near Wentworth".

There also seem to be instances where the person has said a place name, the census taker has apparently said "Where's that then", answer "near Leeds (or wherever)". Census taker recognises that name, so that is what is put down!

All I'm trying to say is ......... don't take what is says on any census as the absolute truth!!!

I now very rarely use the birth place name when searching censuses because they are so often wrong!

Daniel Report 4 Sep 2007 22:32

Sylvia 100% as my birth cert has Rhoda (R on the census you found) in Windsor too

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 4 Sep 2007 22:32

I'm sorry but I don't think Sylvia's on the right track. James is a schoolteacher & a retired schoolteacher in 1861 &1871. Rhoda is an assistant teacher in 1861.

& where does Ireland come into it?
