Derek, Bottle of Scotch if you can find the death of Mary Wood, widow of Joseph, in Glossop or Hadfield 1851-1861. You said she was "apparently" buried in Glossop in 1861 - but where did you find that please.

Do you have the records for Hassop.

I'm looking for the death and burial of Emily Ashton c1841 Derby who died sometime between 1901-1911. She had been the sub postmistress at Hassop for some years. She was married at the roman catholic chapel in Bakewell.

In the 1901 census she is at the post office with her daughter Elizabeth and family but unable to locate her in 1911.

Hello Chrissie..sorry..I've found everything you have, including the 1911 Census for Emily's Daughter..married name Kilpin.......but the fact she married in a Catholic Church probably/possibly means she died in that Faith...........and i have been in Matlock records Office today!!..so probably I could have looked and maybe found her.

Hassop is in the parish of Bakewell..and you'd think she'd be on the Civil Rregistration of Death for Bakewell..but she ain't!!

Right then Margaret..this might deserve the best bottle of Malt Whiskey ever...........I've forgotten ,if i ever knew, when MARY WILD was born..but..on the basis that she was baptised 08.06.1805 at Glossop daughter of JEREMIAH and HANNAH........she was buried at Glossop (as MARY WOOD) 27.11.1851 aged 46. (forget 1861..doesn't exist!)

There are only two other Mary Wood Burials at Glossop 1851-1861..one aged 18 and one an infant...........so I think my findings are fairly conclusive...........unless you know better!!!

Joseph Wood married Mary Wild 27.02.1831..witnesses Thomas Wood and John Winterbottom..

JEREMIAH WILD was baptised 03.02.1828...born of Mary Wild a single woman...........no mention of Robert Crossland.....and since the Glssop Records are very exhausting to work through..I never got around to looking for him............but he certainly is not recorded as the father of Jeremiah.
I'm happy to find that Mary Wild's father was called Jeremiah!

Hey Gooner........have been looking at the Church Broughton Records at Matlock..mixed results......

Francis Allen is in fact in the records of baptism as FRANK ALLEN baptised 22.01.1804..son of William and Mary..

Francis Allen married Mary Chamberlain at CB 05.04.1829...havi.........their three children were baptised as follows:

Edwin 12.12.1830
Fanny 28.03.1833
Elizabeth 16.08.1835

There is neither a record of his second marriage..nor of his death at Church Broughton..and the MARY ALLEN who married German Brown was baptised at Church Broughton 07.02.1841 daughter of Charles and

Mary Allen wife of Francis was buried at Church Broughton 22.07.1838 aged 32......still cannot find the birth of mary (Chamberlain)

Thanks for the info - the rest ties in with what I had. But if she died in November 1851, then there is no record on Free BMD or elsewhere of her death, either in Dec 1851 or March 1852 quarters, so I can't get a death cert.

You may recall I entered a plea of inadequacy in using the search facilities of records offices about 3 years ago (we were going to meet for you to induct me and we were snowed up), and I am still inadequate. So where did you find the death of Mary Wood, if not in the national registers then surely it must have been in Church Records. Can you tell me which church? And did it confirm that she was the widow of Joseph Wood? (which is what I want the death cert for).

Never mind about Robert Crossland, I have other info on him in case he is genuinely Jeremiah's father (which I think he may be).

I will get the scotch to you some day.

Dear Margaret..the Burial..not the Death ,of Mary Wood aged 46 is recorded in the Parish Records of All saints Church. Glossop..the date is right.and the record is the original handwritten entry.....but it gives the bare facts only..name date and place..and Vicar...that's Burial Records for you.

Now the record states she was buried at Glossop.....its such a big Parish including a lot of High Peak villages..such as Hadfield and Padfield..and each burial entry does distinguish where the Burial took place..so she was buried at glossop.

No mention of being the widow of Joseph Wood....and anyway...I actually forgot to check...I think Joseph Wood died early 1851....so she is on the 1851 census AND HE IS NOT.
More as I find it.
EDIT 10.18am....have hade a really good look at the original docs for BMD Deaths......and there are no less than FOUR Mary Woods fourth quarter 1851..who's place of Death in unreadable..Sod's Law?? xx

Margaret..in addition to message earlier..I suppose that you know that JEREMIAH WILd married ELLEN NESBITT and had five children before dying at Jackson Street Glossop 13.06.1891 aged 63

I am positive your info is right, re her burial at All Saints. I know that even back then All Saints Glossop had "satellite" churches - one was as far away as St George's in New Mills, but our Mary was definitely the Glossop church, is what you are saying. Just down the road from where I lived till I was 4 and a half.

Yes, I knew about Ellen Nesbitt, or Nisbet. My relative Prentice Fish from Seattle (gg grandson of the pair) visited a few months ago, we went to the church where Jeremiah and Ellen married, and it was so windy we almost got blown off the top of the hill. Really. We had to hang on the gravestones to stay upright. Or maybe it was the whisky.

So, you say there are four possible death records for Mary Wood that are on Free BMD. Is that what you meant? Unreadable. Where do I find them? I can't see any on Free BMD. Or are you saying they are somewhere else that I don't know about?

Hello Margaret.....do you have access to Ancestry....I use their records because they give you access to the original handwritten register....and there are about a dozen Mary Wood death registrations for last quarter 1851..with place of death....four of those places of death are illegible...and it might be those that are missing on FreeBMD....and actually the places that are illegible are quite short,at least one of which might just be Glossop.....
..so you're a whiskey person too.....mmmm

No I'm not a Whiskey person - and do you mean Whiskey? cos that is the Irish stuff, not Scotch.

Yes, I've seen those illegible records now, thanks - I think you can see them on all the three websites, I'd just forgotten - and I've contacted High Peak to get a certificate, cos they don't need the GRO reference, but of course your date of burial is an important one. A point to be remembered - by me.

The death would have been under Hayfield District then.

Hello Sonya..thank you for your PM re GEORGE MARSDEN......one of the problems we have is that there are four of them baptised at Bakewell..none of them as late as 1842.

The next problem is that Bakewell is not only a Parish but also a quite large Civil Registration District....so a birth for George Marsden 1842 registered at "Bakewell" means he could have been baptised in any number of places within the Registration District.;.for instance FLAGG in the High Peak..and BRAMPTON in Chesterfield.which is why, in my reply to your Pm i have asked you to narrow it down a bit if you can.

It's important that we start with something you actually KNOW for certain......

for instance are the children born to George and Emma in Marylebone London actually and indisputably part of your ancestral line??

Several George Marsdens were born married and died in Derbyshire.
