Hi Derek...

I have previously posted looking for information about Emma Barton before I knew you had a Derbyshire thread. I received some replies and although they were helpful I have still not been able to solve the mystery of Emma’s birth place and confirm her parents names

EMMA BARTON, my 2 x great grandmother is a bit of a puzzle, My Great-grandfather Thomas Bridges is the son of WILLIAM BRIDGES and EMMA BARTON. His birth certificate confirms his birth at 125 Horninglow Road, Burton on 19 May 1888 to William Bridges and Emma Bridges nee BARTON

Depending on which census record you look at Emma was either born in Burnaston, Derbyshire or Eling / Romsey, Hampshire in abt 1861.

I am fairly certain she was working as a servant and living at Hoon Hay in 1881, her future husband William Bridges was also at the same address working as a farm waggoner.

I found a birth record for an Emma Barton born in Burnaston and got a copy cert. This says she was born on 11 Dec 1861 to John Barton and Hannah Barton nee BURTON.

Information kindly given by GR members indicate she could have been born in Burnaston and her parents later moved to Eling, Hampshire. This information was also given to me by another person with an Emma Barton in their tree,
the only problem is, their Emma’s mother is Rebecca Barton and NOT HANNAH as on my Great grandfathers birth cert.

I did consider that perhaps her name was Rebecca Hannah or vice-versa but this does not appear to be the case.

I am hoping you may be able to help finding a baptism for Emma in Derbyshire which should confirm if I have the correct birth cert.

Alternatively a marriage record for Emma and William would be helpful. I have no idea where they were married but suspect may be Derbyshire, that is if they were in fact married !

The 1911 census shows them living at Wiggington, Tamworth and being married for 30 years so their marriage must have taken place about 1881, their first son George was born about 1882 in Horninglow, Burton.

12 more children followed being born in either Horninglow or Stretton.

Emma’s husband WILLIAM BRIDGES was born abt June 1859 in Rodsley, Longford, the son of John Bridges (born 1818) originally from Beeston, Norfolk and Elizabeth Neal (born 1821) of Longford Derbyshire. If I am correct John and Elizabeth were married Sept 1848 in Longford

I am hoping that your keen eyes may be able to confirm if I have the correct birth cert for Emma or am I barking up the wrong “tree”
:-)

Hi Derek:

My maternal Grandfather, Leonard Leichtenstein Green, was born on St Helen's Street, Chesterfield, Derby on 24/10/1880. He passed away in Halstead, Essex on 2/9/1945 of carcinoma of the bowel. His parents were Robert Leichtenstein Green, 1855 ?Lincoln - 31/10/1931, Bootle.& Emily Jane Griffin, 28/4/1855, ?Bristol - 23/10/1934, Bootle. They were married on 23/10/1877 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, in Chesterfield.
Leonard fought in the Boer War, on the side of the British, and did extend his visit to South Africa after war's end.. He is next heard of in Halstead, Essex in 1919 after serving in WW1
If you could find any information whatsoever on Leonard, Robert or Emily, I would sure appreciate it..
Sincerely,
Cath, in Canada

I have a few past members of my family tree who were born in the Ilkeston registration district. If i posted their names would it be to much of a wide search to look for baptisms?

I also have a Marriage too. Would you be able to help me please?

Nala. :-)

hello Susan......i agree you have a problem..but you may know more than you're telling me...........I have the Census showing Emma daughter of Rebecca.........but I cannot find an EMMA BARTON daughter of Rebecca.................however. you're right to doubt this because i hasve a baptism for EMMA BARTON 12.01.1862 daughter of John and HANNAH Barton at Etwall Derbyshire.......this is an original parish records Source..cos i have the Etwall PR's............Etwall is but a few miles from Burnaston........Burnaston is in the parish of Etwall......which to me is pretty conclusive...becasue anyone born in Burnaston would have a baptim in the ETWALL Parish Records.....

looking further for you..though at the moment \i can't find her mariage to William Bridges.
EDIT..HoonHay farm is less than a mile south of the A50...a mile or so from Burnaston.....

Further edit.....now here's a twist......John Barton married REBECCA BURTON ! ! ! ! at Repton (very much the same area) 22.05.1859.......which more or less reinforces your suspicion of a Rebecca Hannah/Hannah rebecca................

Hi Derek..

Thanks for your reply....
I also saw the census in 1871 with Emma daughter of Rebecca....
but dismissed this although perhaps I shouldn't have..... as the birth cert for Emma gives her mothers name as Hannah and not Rebecca.....also it gives her father as John Barton an agricultural labourer........

John is not shown on the 1871 census with Rebecca but she is shown as a farmer of 10 acres....In 1881 both John and Rebecca were in Eling (which I guess in where the confusion comes in) farmers of 67 acres.......

Again I maybe incorrectly dismissed this family due to the name difference and them being quite "well off" as at the time of Emma's birth in 1861, John was an agricultural labourer and not a farmer ! Perhaps they inherited some land ?

I will get a copy of the marriage cert to confirm Rebecca Hannah or Hannah Rebecca.

One last question... were John and Rebecca from the Repton area ? Wonder where Eling comes into the picture.

Many thanks for taking the time to look for me
Susan

Will do Derek.. will get it ordered.

One more question, don't worry if you cant tell me.

Were John and Rebecca from the Repton area ? Wonder where Eling comes into the picture.

Derek

Derek Report 14 Mar 2012 16:26

Not sure..but all names mentioned are within a few miles of each other..there are two JOHN BARTON baptisms at repton:-

12.08.1832 son of Samuel and Sarah
21.08.1836 son of Samuel and Elizabeth...and a further two John Bartons at Aston on Trent.....again in the same very close area.

I'll see if i can narrow it down.

Derek.

Hello Nala..embarrassingly my Ilkeston Baptisms end in 1901!!..which is no great problem because I go to Matlock Records Office quite frequently....

I did look on the 1911 census..and found the following:-

There is no David Tolley 1902..but there is an ARTHUR 1903; a George William 1905 and Lily 1910.........Bmd.s tell me that Arthur Tolley married Mary Draycott 1902........there is a family of Draycotts in Ilkeston |records prior to 1901..but no Hollis or Tolley

Again on the 1911..there is an Arthur Hollis born 1910 in addition to Lucy and Gladys..chidren of Aryhur and Julia

sorry I cannot d better at this moment..but i tend to specialise only up to 1911.........I'll get back to you.

Hello Derek,
I'm hoping you can help to find baptisms of my great aunts and uncles.
Parents William Clark (sometimes Clarke) and Martha nee Limb. They marry Chesterfield 1866, residence at time - West ? Barr. The 1911 census says 12 children born (crossed out as she is widowed).
I have accounted for 11 who appear on census, so 1 missing. The last 3 (? 4)are born Nottingham. In 1871 the family are at Bank Street, Chesterfield and by 1881 at Hartington Road, Hasland, Chesterfield. William was born S-in Ashfield and Martha in Skegby.
I'm looking for Richard b 1866, (then ?? the missing one as there is a 4 year gap), Emma 1870, George 1871, Ellen 1873, Harry 1875, Charles (or ? Charles William) 1877, Charlotte 1879/80 and Emily Etty 1882 - all Chesterfield RD.
Florence 1883, Susannah 1885 are found in Nottingham, missing is Grandma Mabel 1887.
I would be most grateful if you can find any of them. Thanks.

Also a question, did I see on your thread somewhere that you have some Notts OPR's - if so, which areas as they may help me too? My Clarks seem to be back and forwards across the Derbys/Notts borders. I do visit Matlock - bless that hill !! - and Nottm Records Offices but there is never enough time to find everything!

Hi Derek,
Long shot, but do you have any information on Rebecca MORRELL born in the Belper area around 1810?

Regards Annette

Derek

Derek Report 1 Apr 2012 11:42

Hello Annette...........I have a baptism for a REBECCA MORRELL at Belper 16.01.1809....daughter of Daniel and Rebecca. I'm not entirely happy about it because I can't find a marriage for the alleged parents...unless Rebecca was at the younger end of a family that included DANIEL born 1787 son of Daniel and Rebecca.
It was very common to have very large families even over a 20 year period.

Alternatively there is a Rebecca Morrell born Alfreton 1807..who married a Samuel Farnsworth 20.10.1828....and died in 1841

That's all I have at the moment..any other information you have would help me to go further....

Derek.
