Linda Report 8 Aug 2010 23:19

Hi cherilyn, this one has got me puzzled!! Nicholas Leonard was born in c 1844 in rush dublin, he came first to nz then victoria, then nsw where he stayed until his death in 1916. He married a margaret hughes, and they had several children. But I can't find the marriage!!! I'm pretty sure it was in either nsw or vic and not nz, and I'm really hoping it was nsw where the records are so much better and it may give us his mothers name. I know his father was a michael leonard from his death cert, but the death was registered by one of his sons, who gives his grandmother as unknown???? All the children appear to have been born in nsw in the 1880's. Thanking you in advance for anything you may find. Regards Linda :)

Re the morans, no connection it appears!! PS never did hear back from the bird on ancestry!!!!!

Surname: LEONARD
Given Names: Francis James
Event: B
Father: Nicholas
Mother: Margaret HUGHES
Birth Place: BARN
Year: 1887
Reg Number: 25965

The first birth is in 1877 in Albury, right there on the NSW-Vic border. But no marriage found in Vic or NSW (or NZ). From 1886, they were in Corowa, except for the one Vic birth above of course.

Sorry :-(

Thanks for looking Cherilyn, didn't think I could have missed it! Well, that is so odd. Nicholas was too young to have married in the Uk and margaret was born in Vic, perhaps they never actually married?!! Thanks again, linda :)
No she wasn't she was born in Wilunga SA, I wonder if they married there, and how to go about finding out?

Linda Report 9 Aug 2010 06:10

Hi cherilyn, thanks for that, as you say if it's there!! Have just realised that margaret was probably underage if born in 1858 and had her first child in 1877. Fingers crossed and thanks again for your help, regards Linda :)

Linda Report 9 Aug 2010 14:28

Hello again cherilyn. Well I did as you suggested and Kerri very kindly found me margaret leonards death details, so having just downloaded the cert from vicbmd I'm more confused than ever!!!!!! It definitely says she was born in Willunga in 1858, died 1938 in Vic, and was married aged 18 in Chiltern Vic. I make that about 1876, francis born 1877, all right and proper, BUT the marriage is not coming up on vicbmd. It's beginning to look very much like they never married, unless I'm missing something? Can I get your views on this? Thanks again, linda :)

edit: kerri also suggested raogk so have sent off to one of them.

Oh Cherilyn...thank you so much for the extra bits you have found...can you see what I mean about the name changes though? Was this common..I mean to go from Hogar Frank to William and then have the extra Frederick added on...misspellings I understand...
Can I ask please about the parents death..there is a Carl in there..who would this relate to???
Big hug from another Aussie who would love to be there now..xxx

angelas ashes Report 9 Aug 2010 23:56

Hi Cherilyn...sorry for being a nuisance..picking your brains here...
Mary Ann Shegorrick married Hogar Frank in 1874 Queensland..
Mary Ann Frank married Wilhelm Lohmann 1910 Queensland..
Do you think these are 2 seperate marraiges..to 2 seperate people or are Frank and Lohmann the same person...the only death I can find is in 1939 for a Hugo Franks so that would mean Mary Ann would have had to be divorced...I am so muddled..the last child she had was in 1904 and that was Norah whos surname was Sheggorick..some of the children born as Frank are registered in the same year as Lohmann..this is really hard to understand...if you can help me at all I would be so grateful..xx

Cherilyn Report 10 Aug 2010 15:09

Omg angela, what a mess!!! I think there is nothing for it but to order the 2 marriage certs...or her death cert, though that will rely on the knowledge of the informant.

I would suggest she did marry Hogar but the marriage did not last long and she 'took up with' Wilhelm, with whom she had most of the chn. They must have decided to marry in 1910. Can't see a divorce in the papers but that doesn't mean much...

If you do decide to order them I would really love to know what they say!!!

Carl is shown as Wilhelm's father on his death reg, mother Fredericka.

Thanks Cherilyn..it is a mess isnt it!..In the back of my mind I seem to remember a letter mum was sent..something about Paul Albert Frank, changing his name by deed poll.I cant find him in the births under Lohmann, only Frank. Will order the marraige to Franks in 1874 and the last birth which is Norah in 1904.It should list all siblings(fingers crossed). Then I will try and get in touch with my cousin and see if she is aware of anyone in the family with a marraige cert for Mary Ann and Wilhelm. If not then I will have to send for that..I will definately let you know what I find and a big thank you once again..you are very kind..xx
