Simon,
Can you please come back to us and explain where you got all your original facts from?
I have a horrid feeling you've plucked some from the air? (and used guesswork for the rest?)
We need to know whom you are starting with.... are you going from Maria forwards, or have you got Mary Ellen as a start and are working backwards?
......if you are starting from Mary Ellen, then you MUST get her birth cert to be certain of details, because i think this is your Mary Ellen...
1901 RG number: RG13 Piece: 3735 Folio: 38 Page: 27 Reg. District: Salford Sub District: Regent Road Address: 28, Mary Street, Salford County: Lancashire -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MCCORMICK, Maria Head Widow F 40 1861 House Worker Manchester MCCORMICK, John Son Single M 20 1881 Glass Packer Manchester MCCORMICK, Eliza Daughter Single F 17 1884 Cap Machinist Manchester MCCORMICK, Kate Daughter F 12 1889 Attending School Manchester Salford >>MCCORMICK, Mary Daughter F 9 1892 Attending School Manchester Salford MCCORMICK, Margaret Daughter F 7 1894 Attending School Manchester Salford MCCORMICK, Agnes Daughter F 5 1896 Manchester Salford
That is NOT the same family as the 1881 you believe them to be.
I have posted the entire set from 1881 to 1911 for the John W McCormick that marries Sarah A (not Catherine) and they do not have a child called Mary Ellen..... however the alternate 1901 census i have posted does have a widowed Maria and a son called John.
I think you'll find if you order the birth for Mary Ellen (Births Sep 1892 McCormick Mary Ellen Bury 8c 590 ) you will discover that John is her brother and Maria is her mother.
I might however be very wrong, but the facts do not add up any other way :-)

Tracey's right - you can tell by checking the local RO's index, via: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1883 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference MCCORMICK John W BLACKSHAW Sarah A Salford Register Office or Registrar Attended Salford SAL/43/146 ROEBUCK John WALSH Catherine Salford Register Office or Registrar Attended Salford SAL/43/147
Until 1898, non-conformists (excl quakers, jews) were not authorized to keep official marr registers, so the registrar would need to attend to get the signatures in his rego - he would also attend all register office marrs of course.
