This is complicated, I have a Elizabeth Louen/Lowen born 1874, Widow living with William C Sherriff born 1879, Widow at 20 Gillett St, Hackney. William C Sherriff's wife Lydia Lowen died in 1934.
William and Lydia's son James Sherriff born 1926 (still going strong) is saying his mother was Irish!!
I have researched Lydia Lowen family, they are all Londoner's going way back.
I found a marriage for David Lowen( Lydia's brother, died 1933) and Elizabeth Notley in 1918, Hackney, so almost certain Elizabeth Lowen above was David's widow.
James was 13 in 1939 and living with this Elizabeth (his aunt by marriage) could she be the Irish mother figure he remembers? Hoping to find some irish facts to this 91 year old's memories.
Long and not so short, was Elizabeth Lowen born 9th Jan 1874(1939 info) Irish ??

Can you recap please. James Sherriff born 1926, can you confirm his parents names.

Thanks all, was thinking that Elizabeth Lowen nee Notley may have been married before? She was 44 when she married David Lowen.

How accurate is the birth date of 9th Jan 1874, given on the 1939 register for Elizabeth Lowen ?

Usually the date on the 1939 is fairly accurate as to day and month and more likely to be out on year if anything, but it could be either.

Just to add ...............

my Dad always said that our family originated in Ireland and were horse trader, and he was only in his 50s and 60s when he said that!

My brother always maintained said family were Irish, but belonged to a Scottish clan .... based solely I think on seeing a list of names for that clan that included our family name. He found that list when he was living up in Scotland around 1953/4

I've got them all as Agricultural labourers (women as lace makers) in Buckinghamshire, right back to 1740
