Member Since: January 2007 Posts: 605 Send Message	This is complicated! Above is my great grandfather. I am trying to work out how to order his birth certificate to find out who his father was. So far I have his marriage certificate He married Elizabeth Waine 13/11/1871 in whiston. On the certificate william’s father is blank. I have found 1841 census Adam Houghton 15 think this should be 25 Elizabeth Houghton 20 Peter Houghton 4 Ellen Houghton 1 (I think she must have died) 1851 Census John Swift Elizabeth Swift Peter Houghton 14 stepson Margaret Houghton 9 stepdaughter William Swift 1 son.......this is who I am interested in 1871 William Swift is still with his parents the year he gets married.Marriage certificate says William Houghton A Roberts Naylor is a witness on the certificate..he is a neighbour of the swift’s in the 1871 census I now need to work out how to order and how many birth certificates to order to see if William was a Swift or Houghton . Please help...this is driving me nuts!, In 1881 census William calls himself Swift After that he calls himself Houghton Any advise would be very much appreciated Elizabeth

	If a woman is/was married any child born to her is deemed to be the child of her husband EVEN IF the husband is/was dead at the time of conception. I once found a child born 10 years after the husband's death, but that child was still deemed to be the husband's child. Therefore, it looks as if William Houghton was born to the widow Elizabeth Houghton before she married John Swift. It might be worth trying to get a look at the original Parish Record as some vicars would put the name of the putative father on the baptism of the child of a single woman or widow. The birth certificate probably will NOT tell you the true name of the father ......... The GRO Index shows this ........... HOUGHTON, WILLIAM FORSHAW GRO Reference: 1849 D Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 20 Page 759 same as for Margaret ......... HOUGHTON, MARGARET FORSHAW GRO Reference: 1842 M Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 20 Page 756 Marriage of Adam and Elizabeth?? Marriages Mar 1841 (>99%) FORSHAM Elizabeth Prescot 20 555 HOUGHTON Adam Prescot 20 555 In other words, she was being honest in saying her married name and her maiden name ..... but Adam had been dead for several years. It is possible that William considered himself a Swift as John would be the only father that he knew.

	The problem with the 1841 is that it does NOT give the relationships between people in the same household I wonder if that 1841 is accurate in saying that Adam was between 15 and 21, and that he was NOT Elizabeth's husband but her brother-in-law??? ie were he and William brothers? NOTE:- ages of people over the age of 15 on the 1841 were rounded DOWN to the nearest 5, so Adam could have been as old as 19. There is this marriage on the FMP ....... Marriage: 12 May 1844 St Luke (formerly St Wilfrid), Farnworth (Widnes), Lancashire, England Peter Houghton - (X), full age, Engineer, Bachelor, Whiston Elizabeth Baldwin - of full age, Spinster, Whiston Groom's Father: Adam Houghton, Labourer Bride's Father: Zachariah Baldwin, Office clerk Witness: Elizabeth Houghton, (X); Hugh Lucas Married by Banns by: JD Latiward, curate Register: Marriages 1837 - 1845, Page 210, Entry 419 Source: LDS Film 1655236 But Peter was born 1837ish and William died 1839 so possibly he felt he was closer to Adam? 	Lancs bmd show that Adam and Elizabeth married at St Michael, Huyton Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1841 HOUGHTON Adam FORSHAW Elizabeth Huyton, St.Michael Prescot C2/1/86 The marriage certificate should show whether she was claiming to be a widow or spinster
