I suspect the address on the marriage certificate is Lillie Road- although I can't see him on the electoral register there, so it may have just been a temporary address.

Just looking at the address on William's death cert- unfortunately I can't see anyone listed there in 1912/ 1913 on the electoral register. These families were at that address in 1911

Interesting though that Mary Lynn was living with my Grandparents. Maybe that what what caused the rift, or whatever happened. My Dad would have been only 2 then, too young to remember, his sister would have been 4 or 5, but unfortunatly cant ask her.

I was thinking the same Deborah. Imagine poor John too- stuck between his wife and his mother! I'll bet there was some tension in that house :)

I just emailed my cousin with your findings, and I am still laughing at her reply

I do have world wide, if thats the same thing, what you have there my cousin found, we we not sure if it was JCL, your transcript has far more information.

All ours says is JCL Lynn, port of New York, and the date, the piece of paper is headed up , Statement of master vessel, regarding changes in crew prior to departure.

He was in the Merchant Navy, so we didnt think of that, just thought he was travelling, what do I need to do to find out.

Or, I would be happy to let you have my sign in name and password, you could probably find your way round it better that I can, I pay for this thing but I dont really know how to use it to its full extent.

If you just put J C L Lynn, date of birth 1901 in the search and then click "immigration and travel" they should come up- hopefully with the original images.

Yes, we was crew, I found a button to click on crew.

I meant yes he was crew.

OK, thanks Deborah, I just thought the original might give a little more information.

The original document looks as if he went at the last minute, or that he changed places with another crewman for whatever reason.

The only address's that seem to be on the ones I looked at ( I did a random sample) were the addresses of where they came from, but it doesnt even show that information for JCL.

I didnt realise we could get all that information, that was a learning curve, you could spend all day looking at that.

However, it does look as though he went at the last minute.

We know he went all over the world with the Merchant Navy, recently, as these events have unfolded, we have begun to think he ran away to the navy, because of his Mother dissapearing, then he lost a 9 month old brother when he was 9 himself. Another sibling died, got no details of that. His Dad died when he was 13. Goodness knows where his Mother was.

Enough to make you go crazy.

I could certainly spend all day looking at records. I love trying to put a life story to a name.

Funny how perceptions differ- I'm not sure about John running away to the Navy. I suspect after his father died John continued to live with his mother. I should imagine money was tight and Mary worked hard. John was probably encouraged to find work as soon as he was able to help support himself and ease the burden on Mary.

John obviously remained in contact with his mother, and liked her enough to allow her to witness his wedding, and move in (albeit briefly!). I know that Mary was not on the 1911 census, but she could have been sick (often people in infirmary's were just recorded by initials), maybe visiting relatives in England, in prison?, or living in service in either Ireland, or England. I don't believe she deserted her family...but I'm not sure we'll ever really know.

EDIT: Did your Dad manage to sort the photo of Mary & Lady Guinness?

I prefer your version, and hopefully thats what it was. My Grandfather was a lovely man, he was a Gentleman as well as a gentle man. My Dads the same.

I could understand her getting sick by 1911, she had a sad life, we found a lovely photo of her yesterday, sitting in a chair with JCL standing beside her, he looked to be in his 20's.

I remember he always wore a great coat and a trilby, and he wiould always tip his hat at the ladies, he was bald from a young age and I remember my Granny always used to get very cross because the barber charged him 6d to cut his hair, he only had a dozen hairs on the top of his head.

Those passenger lists were facinating, lovely just to look at.

My husband and I do a lot of historical research, but not dead people, we do houses and buildings, (there is a reason for that) I enjoy both, especially when its personel, like your family.

Just sorry we got stuck on Mary Lynn, but I can see why now.

Most of the other family members I knew, I was told a lot as a child, but unfortunatly Mary was not mentioned that much.

He hadnt found the photo yesterday, but he had all the stuff out. I will give him a ring now and find out.

I phoned my Mum, he has got another box to look through, he gets very tired these days, so it takes him a little while.
