Its no big deal if GR rule out advocating the use of other sites on here its not in their interest to alow it,,,Tesco wouldnt let a sign be put up go to Boots its far better and give Boots free advertising.

Its been in place in past T&C even back in 2003 they didnt allow the advertising of web addresses or copy and paste material from other sites.

I am disgusted !

Whilst we all accept that GR have its Terms and Conditions, it must also be accepted that GR have allowed a certain amount of latitude in the past as to what was acceptable or not.

It seems to me the the goal posts have now changed and that what may have gone unremarked before is now considered an offence with no right of appeal

Jax SHOULD have been given a FULL explanation of what had caused offence and further SHOULD have been given the opportunity to modify or remove the post herself before the big stick was brought down.

Such treatment of Jax is totally unacceptable and should be deplored.

If this is the future, then I think the comradery and spirit of co-operation of paying members will quickly be lost.

I for one will think twice about contibuting to these Community Boards in future

Who remembers the ill conceived 'Help Clinic'?

The volunteer appointees were only allowed to use the records held by GR, so basically their hands were tied.

The strength of these boards is in its members. If we can only use 'approved' sites, then many requesters will come away unfulfilled.

By giving the links to the source records, we are helping to pass on our own knowledge into research.

Personally, I feel that GR take the attitude of Don't ask, Don't tell. Consequently, if someone makes a fuss over another commercial organisation being promoted, they have to been seen to act.

I cannot repeat my post incase I get reported again.

I did not mention any other site and I think the people who I have told would agree there was nothing wrong with what I said.

I had a post reported once for giving a link to a duplicate thread?? this also took place in the early hours of the morning....maybe someone does not like me :-(

I am appalled at what I have just read on this thread, and elsewhere.

Yes, it does say in GR's T&C's that GR does not allow the advertising of web addresses or copy and paste material from other sites.

but they have so far adopted a laissez faire policy ...... which has actually been to their advantage as so many of us have stayed with GR ONLY because of the help we can give on these boards.

I am also absolutely appalled to read the pm that they sent to jax, and presumably the same letter was also sent to the other people.

That was the very worst example of corporate policy being handed to an underling ......... rude, ungrammatical, and non-informative.

Unfortunately, my sub is good until June :-(

I got this email in November I think I would have a few words to say now :-)

Dear jax

Would you like to help us create an even better Genes Reunited website - and get paid for it?

We are always looking for ways to ensure that Genes Reunited is as helpful and enjoyable to use as possible. At the moment we have lots of new ideas for ways we could change the site but, before we go ahead, we want to talk to our users and find out what they think of them.

We have commissioned the independent market research company, Movement, to help us with this important project. Researchers from Movement will be talking to people who are registered with www.genesreunited.co.uk in Central London on 30th November,1st and 2nd of December, and we would like to offer you the chance to take part.
We would like to know what you think of Genes Reunited at the moment, and find out your feelings about the changes we have in mind.

The research sessions will be one-to-one and last an hour. They will be held in private, and all of those who take part will receive a payment to show our appreciation.

I could not go due to ill health, but this new email has really got my back up :-|

It was one of those computerized emails Sylv.

If someone had not mentioned they had one, I would not have bothered to look at mine.

I could have read this email in a weeks time and wondered what on earth it was referring to

That is the problem

Their pms have always been uninformative.

They do NOT tell a person which post or thread has been removed.

If one had made 50 or more postings a day ....... as was not uncommon in the "good old days" of only a year ago .............. then it was often difficult to remember where one had posted, which posting had been removed, and therefore very difficult to find out what one had done wrong!

very good idea to name the reporters and give a reason why the thread has been taken off the board, also has mentioned above maybe the reporter could pm the poster and explain why they find the post offensive.
both good ideas.x

And surely the reason a site ( or store) gets and keeps it's customer base is not by denying that the 'other' exists or must not be mentioned, but by emphasising its OWN merits and working even harder than ever to keep customer loyalty.

Even T****s make a point of mentioning A**a ( or is it vice versa) in its adverts, eg 'we are cheaper overall' , or 'won't be beaten on price' OR 'Offer outstanding customer service and loyalty rewards'.

Certainly what none of them want to do is really hack off their customers and have them leave for ever.....

I have now gone from being angry with the current situation to sitting here chuckling to myself.

I'm on a different computer where GR isn't bookmarked so I googled Genes. One of the topics found relating to GR was the press release about the British Newspaper Archive so i decided to read it and guess who's advertising appears on the page.

Anyone what to guess who it is?

Couldn't help myself so I have taken a couple of screen shots of the screen.

Actually, you are both right.

there is an ad for A, GB, WVR, FRPC and OR.

Very interesting indeed. Maybe I should post them on FB just to be cheeky.
