Many of you will think this no loss at all but I have been trying to buy sago, tapioca and flaked rice because I love 'em. The best I have yet come up with is semolina from Tesco.

How can I recapture my mis-spent childhood without a bit of frog's spawn?

never heard of flaked rice

Never heard of flaked rice! Where you been? LOL

Have heard and seen all of it - in the past. Have just logged onto the tesco site, and keyed in tapioca - no - only tinned!

Wonder if Morrisons would have any, as they are slightly old fashioned in their store contents.

Perhaps a health food shop? Cannot believe its not available. lol

Used to love Sago and Tapioca as part of school dinners, so long as I could stop the cook dumping a dollop of jam into it.

Oooh Brian - I loved it at school with a dollop of jam - like you lots of people hated it (with or without with the jam) - it meant I could eat everyone else's 'frogspawn'!!

Sharron

Sharron Report 19 May 2009 23:15

I never saw the need for jam either,or the drinking chocolate powder they used to put on semolina at school.

maggiewinchester Report 19 May 2009 23:43

Drinking chocolate powder? - Would that be the 'special' chocolate semolina!!!!!
Rather like the Pizza's my children's school offered 20 years ago - a pizza base with tomato ketchup and Kraft cheese squares on top - and they wondered why the children were hyper!!!

My children took sandwiches.....

Oh Sharron, you have made me remember something I used to get occasionally, haven't had it for ages!
I never had school dinners so didn't have these things, Mum only made rice puddings but there used to be a sachet of semoline that you just made up with hot water I think, it was very sweet but I loved it and could eat a whole packet of it made up. I am salivating just remembering lol
Must have a look and see if it is still available lol

Never heard of sago until I was given my dear late mother-in-laws recipe book with a recipe for sago in a homemade custard. My husband said how nice it was and have been making it now for nearly 20 years.Oh Yum. Oh Bliss. Oh what a scrummy food. We all love it and passed the recipe on to two of the kids.

I loved these at home and at school, but must admit to not having had either in recent years. Then again, I am not much of a 'pudding' person, per say (sp) these days for health reasons. Occassionally have a pot rice as an alternative to yoghurt to get a lining on my stomach in the mornings, again for health reasons

My Mum once made a rice pudding with no rice in it !.She put the milk and sugar in a dish in the oven and forgot the rice!

'Weigh out' shops do all of the above, as do many small health food/deli's.

I used to eat other kids sago, rice pud etc at school ...in exchange for them having my prunes, or meat :)

When i go to Morrisons on Friday, I am going to get both Sago and Tapioca. I already use dried butter beans, particularly in my soups and stews. Very nourishing. I am fastly going off the few processed foods I do eat, and am reverting back to my childhood. Em, em, food only that is

Deana - My fourth baby, a prem. and a caeser, was fed on diluted Carnation Milk. She was a little devil for the projectile vomiting. Now made a lovely bonnie lass. Only the other week in conversation with her, she said she prefered Carnation Milk to Cream. I told her it was all I could get down her. She couldn't believe it, and we had never discussed this before.
As an aside, I am sure I have bought flaked rice at sometime or another, but can't remember what for except pudding

Morrisons then. Doesn't mean they are going to stock them down here.

I will have to go to Bognor. What a treat that will be!

Sharron, I found flaked rice in Tesco a couple of weeks ago. It was on the shelf with the jellies and angel delight type puddings. I searched around for 5 mins and had to ask in the end. I didn't notice if sago and tapioca were there too, but you never know.
