As I have posted before ...
GR is hosted on a Microsoft IIS server as are all D C Thomson / Brightsolid systems inc FMP.

Most of the www is hosted on Apache. Apache is very well suited to adapting to all kinds if connection quality. IIS is mainly used for intranets where people share private webs and office documents together with database access. It is designed for high performance (which it delivers) but is poor at serving slow connections. Attempts to remedy this tend to compromise security.

You may consider that GR should be hosted on Apache which is far more robust than IIS. That won't happen because BrightSolid are 100% Microsoft.

Thus success in getting a smooth connection to GR depends on the client connection quality which is a mix of the ISP and the home user setup. ISPs vary a lot and can give good performance in one city and poor in another. Often the user has to decide if tv choice, broadband speed or price is the main factor.

Users who are not interested in optimising their home wifi setup will not get optimal performance. Neither the ISP nor the www target will care so long as any problems are limited.

If GR was badly setup everybody would have a problem. They don't. Thus a minority are running into problems with IIS which is known not to be v reliable with slow connections.

It has always been the case on GR that complaints rarely give any details at all about their wifi/browser config. Basic and common mistakes are to have the router nr the tv or any large metal object such as microwave, fridge or buried nr an old telephone socket. Always use 5Ghz rather than 2.4Ghz when available.

Most people can now upgrade their connection to fibre with copper only to the cabinet . OpenReach charge £60 for this. Virgin are fully fibre.

good luck

Thank you Rollo. I know you have posted the information before but I haven't been able to quite grasp what you were saying. This time I understand (well, sort of).

Our router is nowhere near any of the type of objects you mention. It has been tried in a couple of different places and where we have it now was found to be the best., I have no idea of the Ghz but I am sure OH will have it set to the best that is available to us. I think we looked at fibre when we moved here and we didn't have access but I know that OpenReach have done a fair bit of work in the area so maybe we can look again.

Having said all that, the problem with Genes is just a very minor irritation. There are far more important things in the world to worry about.

Glad I don't visit GR very often.
I remember years ago when this happened, GR Support said delete messages and threads; I did the former, and started on the latter but, as one cannot list and delete a list of them, I gave up on that after a while.

If you check out my thread on this and similar problems there is a reply from Genes. I reported it on Monday, as I reported the watched threads alerts not working about a month ago. Don't hold your breath but they do know. Maybe if more people report they won't think it is a figment of our imagination. :-D :-D

Problem is ......................

I have a long memory, and problems like this, reporting them, GR eventually agreeing that it is not a figment of one person's imagination, and saying "handed over to our technical team and they are looking at it" have been all too common over the years since the sale to ITV.

I honestly and truly don't expect anything to be done ................

it will improve by itself, or it won't

If it doesn't improve, we'll all struggle along, or more of us will leave

It doesn't matter really to the powers-that-be .................... FMP is their major concern.

Hi Peeps. I am still getting the Error page today and have been ever since I first posted this thread. They told me to clear my cache too.

I have to go in through the Customer Support on the error page or by clicking on the Gen es Reunited name and still have to wait ages.

When will they realize it is not US but THEM!! :-| :-| :-| :-| :-|

It seven happening to people who it did'nt happen to before like Sylvia..

Come on GR this is a life line to a lot of lonely and homebound people for company and to share their troubles and joys.

Mine improved then worsened again.

I think the same as Sylvia - I'll struggle along or leave. I've been thinking about doing so lately but I can be an ornerary (spelling?) critter and I wondered whether Genes was deliberately putting people off in order to promote other sites that they have a hand in.

Just saying ..... :-0

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 5 Oct 2017 15:37

In the lqst couple of weeks I hqve logged in using smart phones connected by public wifi or 3G, ancient XP machines on wifi and slow ethernet, really fast state of the art kit. Operating systems Android 6,7 Linux Windows XP, 7, 10. I never ever clear the cache. I have not tried any kind of tablet or Apple device.

No problems connecting at all. None accessing threads. None displaying tree.

If there was a systematic problem with GR then pretty well everybody would suffer from it. They do not.

Thus it is more likely than not that connection problems lie with either the user box or the ISP. As nobody complaining ever gives any details of how they connect or security software used it is impossible to do any more than guess at the problem.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Oct 2017 19:04

Rollo

I have previously given details on my device, my server, my security system, etc etc

I use a desktop, Windows XP 2002

I have high speed WiFi via modem

Mozilla Firefox

Server Shaw Cable

Security AVG (in addition to whatever Windows XP has)

I doubt that I have the same server as anyone else who has been complaining.

I access GR at times when I very rarely see anyone from the UK, and now, by very few people from other countries :-(

Not many people still use Windows XP and/or a desktop

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 5 Oct 2017 20:37

It is odd the way some people have problems and others don't. I would understand it better if all those having trouble were using the same server or the same browser but they don't seem to have much in common, though I admit I am not very technologically minded.

Apart from a slow spell a couple of weeks ago I have had no problems on either the iPad (Apple with Safari) or the desktop (BT, Windows 10 and Firefox).

EDIT Rollo I know you have explained the problem for me before and I sort of understand what you are saying but I still find it odd that so many people are having problems at the same time.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Oct 2017 21:06

Vera .............

that is what is puzzling to me as well, plus the fact that some of us are in other countries and other time zones!

Although Rollo has said in the past that it is GR's server that is the problem .............. it must have trouble talking to all the different servers that we have, even the Chrome that GR staff used to tell us we "had" to use!

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 5 Oct 2017 22:13

I have the same problem using various servers, mobiles, laptops, ipad etc.,

Doesn't matter whether I'm on superfast BB or 3 /4 G GR is rubbish again!

We have had the same slow connection problems for a decade or more and yes I can remember all the trite advice spouted by them in order to resolve 'our' problem.

Utter tripe :-|
