1939,

Ethel M Roberts,bn 1913 and is a filing clerk (surgical manufactures.)

Has this been said before, no relevance to Ethel Margaret Roberts but thought I would post anyway.

Thomas Hall married Minnie Jane Walton born Leamington/Harbury Warwickshire 1862-1907 Farnham married 31/10/1888
Had William H Hall in Farnham 1889/90

Thomas Hall married A/M/J 1909 to Edith Walton 1869 born Harbury Warwickshire they had Muriel Elizabeth Hall 1910.

Minnie Jane had sister Edith!

Hi,

Just another possibility? Normally a birth with mmn being the same indicates an unmarried woman, but not always so. Found this marriage which, although in a completely different area, could fit the time frame.

Remember it was during the war and people did move around quite a bit then. Also, if Ethel was married and her husband had died she may not have been able to raise a child on her own - or maybe it was a wartime romance and husband didn't know?

Re working for GPO once married - my Mum was a GPO telephonist and had to stop working when she married in 1951.

According the postalheritage .org.uk website the marriage bar was introduced 1876 and finally abolished 1946 as married women were needed as part time workers.
