JoonieCloonie Report 28 Feb 2016 22:03

heh, I was going to suggest that you post here what you sent me privately but I see you have done it :-)

the site is what I posted above

http://scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

you have to create an account with a password, which is free, and then you buy credits (5 at a time I think) to look at search results and certificates

you will only need one credit to look at the list of John Abbott births 1940-1945

if someone reading has spare credits they might do this for you so wait a bit

but to view a birth certificate from the last 100 years you have to order it and receive it by mail

... just in case he isn't one of those John Abbotts ... a John Mee was born there in 1937 ...

if Mabel is a sister, since she was born mid-1943, likely John was born a little earlier or later

there is no marriage for her name (middle initial T)

you mentioned John was last known in Barrow in Furness late 1950s so this was when they were all still children, in care together?

if they were adopted, all their surnames might have been changed ... but you are in touch with Dorothy?

good luck with the birth certificates

Rambling Report 28 Feb 2016 22:22

Joonie according to freebmd Mabel's middle initial was F? and it does look as if it is on image on FMP also.

Ah, Ancestry has it wrong then (not surprisingly!). But it's definitely blurry.

Dave, maybe communicate with the GRO if you put 'T' - to say it may be 'F' - just so you don't get a 'not found' reply.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Feb 2016 14:38

excellent Dave, John's birth shortly after the parents' marriage, almost certainly him, so that should help

the 1903 birth looks like his father - that certificate you can view on line for 5 credits if you think it would help

there is no birth in England that acccounts for this death:

Name: David M Abbott
Birth Date: abt 1904 (probably 1903 after March)
Date of Registration: Mar 1960
Age at Death: 56
Registration district: Evesham
Inferred County: Worcestershire
Volume: 9d
Page: 127

Hi joonie cannot find david abbott in deaths would it be on GR thank you DAVE

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Feb 2016 16:11

sorry Dave, most of us here don't use GR for records and I don't know what's here

What I posted was from Ancestry, but you can see it at Freebmd

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Deaths Mar 1960
ABBOTT David M (age) 56 Evesham 9d 127

do you know the circumstances in which the children were in care? had Mary died?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Feb 2016 16:21

just for info and completeness, I wondered whether the David in the WWI record and the David who died in 1960 might be this one (since the military record says born St Giles)

Births Jun 1904
Abbott David St. Geo. East 1c 333

but that child died in infancy so that birth can be ruled out

Deaths Sep 1904
ABBOTT David (age) 0 St. Geo. East 1c 234

hi joonie Dorothy was only about 2 when she was taken into care so there are many questions unanswered .we know her father was born in Scotland as I have got a record of him being born there from that site you kindly gave me also record of john mee abbott born there I have sent for a birth certificate for john maybe that will answer some questions also 1911 census we think is her grandfather with david and a brother living in Glasgow so there must be an uncle or his children somewhere I will keep you updated as soon as I find some more info thank you for all your help DAVE

abbott

abbott Report 29 Feb 2016 16:50

sorry forgot to add mother was married again to a Gordon Williams then move to south Africa for reasons we do not know DAVE

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Feb 2016 17:03

and I'll just add that there is a St Giles district in Edinburgh, and that is in fact where David Abbott was born in 1903, per scotlandspeople

(search for his birth in 1903 and select Edinburgh City, district St Giles)

so the military record that Ann posted from familysearch

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVBR-4GX3

seems to be in error by assigning his birthplace of St Giles to Middlesex rather than Edinburgh, and that is more confirmation that the WWI record is for the right David.

abbott Report 29 Feb 2016 18:21

thanks again seems the facts are coming together we know where dots father was born and hopefully her brother john also her father had a brother called William so maybe cousins somewhere dots so pleased as she never knew about her father or mother so perhaps we can fill in some of the gaps will try and find her parents wedding certificate and go from there best wishes DAVE

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Feb 2016 18:34

In case it hadn't been mentioned and you weren't aware, the Scottish marriage certificate for Mee and Abbott should give their ages and their parents' names, so that should definitely help identify Mary, which I think is still an open question.

I couldn't see a marriage as Mee or Abbott to Gordon Williams in England or Scotland, or a likely passage to South Africa before 1960, or any record in South African national archives for a Mary Mee/Abbott/Williams married to a Gordon (but those records would likely not be recent enough to show any deaths etc.).

abbott

abbott Report 29 Feb 2016 18:40

could be a little after 1960 do I obtain marriage certificate for david and mary from scotlandspeople thanks DAVE

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Feb 2016 19:09

yes Dave - the marriage I noted earlier:

Mary Mee married David Abbott in 1939 in Scotland

because it is recent, you will have to order it rather than just paying credits to view it on line.

abbott

abbott Report 29 Feb 2016 20:20

hi have viewed marriage online thank you for all your help could not have got this far without you I will let you have a rest now and will update you when I receive the certificates best wishes DAVE
