Woody how nice of you to offer to help me, yes my son and I went to Fort George but had no luck finding any details re my Grandad, I loved Inverness and would like to have spent more time there but we were on our way to Thurso where my sons in laws live so we had to motor off.
I really would like to find out which school mother attended I would also like to know whether mother had any siblings, very strange that Mum never mentioned her mother. I am sad that I never ever knew any of Mums family
Nice to know you are still around Frank.

Message in from the person who went to Kew to search Nurses records.
Not the same one who went to LMA,but a different very nice member who was going....you are getting spoilt now Evelyn..

Had some spare time today so I searched the first 10 books(!) of the index to nurses. Time consuming as each book has to be ordered although they don't take that long to search. Anyway I searched 1921 (bit early I know but thought I might as well start at the beginning!) to 1930 and she wasn't found. The books give name, home address and where and when qualified.

There was one MacLeod whose address was in Stornaway. Jessie Ann, who qualified 1924-5 at Plaistow Hospital. Address was 30 Francis St, Stornaway.

There are probably 30-40 more books to search. The Catalogue index isn't very clearly worded so it's not possible to tell how they all differe and some seem to cover the same sort of dates.

I also looked at all the surviving R Macleod and Mcleod officers WW1 files. Again, all had to be ordered as the Catalogue doesn't give any detail. There were 12 files. Only 1 was in Seaforth Highlanders but he was born 1890 and no pre WW1 service was given. Only one man appeared to have pre WW1 service. He enlisted in 1903 and was with Royal Regiment of Artillery as Sergeant and was promoted in 1915 and became Lieutenant with RGA. Born 1886, married (no details), living in Edinburgh. Was serving in Hong Kong from 1907.

I suppose the lack of a definite file means that either he didn't serve in WW1, or his file hasn't survived, or he served after 1920 and his file is still with MOD.

was plain ann now annielaurie
*******************************************************************
We are going to wait and see what Springfield Hospital come back with before Ann maybe makes her way through those other 30-40 books on this mission.
I dont know about everyone else ,but IF Robert MacLeod was a Major as Diane says on her MC then I would have thought that something would be found on him somewhere.
Maybe Woody will unearth something on him in Fort George or wherever it is she is going to search..
And maybe a something on Schools, but I am now off to see what I can find on the Jessie Ann Macloed as per given in Anns message.(Just to rule her out)
Maybe somebody else can find anything on her too?

Woody has been snowbound so I haven't managed to get there yet. So near yet so far, we couldn't even get the car out today.

I've been thinking of your Mum, Evelyn - she's got me hooked as well! Did she speak Gaelic at all? If she lived in Stornoway, she would have learned at least the basics.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 28 Nov 2010 20:22

Woody she spoke beautiful english very pure but could also rattle off some lingo I did not understand

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 28 Nov 2010 20:30

Was it Indian sounding do you think Evelyn?
Or Gaelic?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 28 Nov 2010 20:33

More likely to be gaelic there was nothing Indian about her, she was a vey short (4ft 10 ) lady and weighed about 61/2 stone had a pale complexion quite snobby in attitude

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 28 Nov 2010 20:37

Just that she said she was born India, wondered if she spoke it.Not that she WAS Indian Evelyn.
I have seen a photo or two of her remember and def NOT asian blood.

But then she may have been born Scotland too..Wherever she was born its prob not under the name Diane,if she was she is hiding well!

So did it sound Indian speech?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 28 Nov 2010 20:39

Certainly not Indian sounding Viv

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 28 Nov 2010 21:00

Mother always sounded a bit uppercrust and always gave the impression that she had married below her station, Dad was a proper Londoner very witty , she always had a look of disgust on her face whenever he told a joke

Woody's

Woody's Report 28 Nov 2010 22:21

Mach a seo (get out of here), perhaps? Or if she wanted you to be quiet - Duin do bheul? I'll see if I can find some Gaelic on you tube, that might give you an idea.

The look of disgust could be a Free Church thing! You catch it from hard pews and two-hour long sermons!
Talking of religion, what did you do on a Sunday, Evelyn? Were you allowed to play and read or was that taboo? When I was young, all chores were done on Saturday. Even Sunday's dinner was cooked on Saturday. The only reading permitted on Sunday was the Bible - and we were not really that staunch even though the minister was a relation!

Woody's

Woody's Report 28 Nov 2010 22:26

I know you said she went to school in Stornoway but if perchance her father was stationed at Fort George, then perhaps she went to school in Ardersier for a little while.
Those school records certainly did survive as I've looked at them often.

There's hardly an accent at all up here so perhaps she did spend some time in the Inverness locality.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 28 Nov 2010 23:06

Yes perhaps she did go to school in Inverness thats quite possible.
I dont know why she was sent to live with her Aunt Kate maybe her mother died, strange that she was never mentioned.
She never mentioned what religion she was brought up in but always told us that they were never allowed to read anything other than the Bible on Sunday.
I wonder about her religion , she couldnt have been very religious as my parents were married in a register office.
I dont know if mother had siblings

Woody's Report 28 Nov 2010 23:26

Aw, thanks Joy! It was lovely to meet you also! We saw a lot of Liverpool but also missed stuff. Just the month after we were all there, there was an exhibition of Slavery. That would have been very interesting as well.

Evelyn, that almost certainly points to a Free or Free Presbyterian upbringing, as the Church of Scotland was never that strict.

It's possible that she rebelled against religion, hence the registry office wedding. That said, it could have been down to money or even that there wasn't a Free or FP Church around.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 29 Nov 2010 00:04

I think probably rebellion.
They married in Wandsworth London in 1929.
I know that I was christened also think Ian my eldest brother was but feel sure neither of my younger brothers were christened.
I can never recall mother ever going to church.
I went to Sunday school but dont remember any of my brothers doing so, I think I went because my friends did so.
