Email received...

I have undertaken a search in the Books of Council and Session at the National Archives Office of Scotland re the will of Robert Macleod for the years 1917 – 1930. I did find a few entries under the name of Robert Macleod but unfortunately none of them related to the correct one who resided in Stornoway.

Ok..We know that there is one because it is on Ancestrys Probate Calender Will thing and I was told by the York Probate Office that it was sent back to Scotland..
I have been through York and London and The Scottish Records Office and Sheriffs Office of Stornoway and now Keeper of the Registers of Scotland and also the National Archives of Scotland.
Any ideas?
Back to the first place I started in Scotland I think? The Scottish Records Office?

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 about Robert Macleod
Name: Robert Macleod
Probate Date: 28 Jan 1918
Death Date: 7 Mar 1917
Death Place: Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland
Registry: London

Finally managed to get to Fort George but nothing there about a Robert MacLeod, of any rank. So another dead end. I did leave my details so they said they'd check some lists so I suppose it's a slim chance.

I had a look on SP for a Robert MacLeod with the death date shown in the will, but Zilch. There are three on Service returns but all in 1918 and two are too young to be Diana's father. I had a look at one aged 31 but he was a Private in the Machine Gun Corps and KIA in April 1918. So, if this Robert died in Stornoway, how come his death wasnt' registered??
I would have expected that will to be at NAS but the way things are panning out here, I'm really not at all surprised!

Wody.
Robert Macleod of the Ancestry Will thing that I am trying so hard to get died in Liverpool workhouse infirmary Occupation =Ships Carpenter, and I have his death cert for Evelyn.
Those details are a couple or more pages back.My apologies for not adding in the summary I sent you,it didnt enter my head as I thought you had realised I was dealing with that one.
I just do not seem to be able to obtain the actual Will at the moment though and reason I am trying so hard is
A=Because he died before Diane married
B=to see what it says
C=Because a Catherine MacLeod Mackinnon (widow)is involved (His sister?Aunt Kate?)
D=His home address was Stornoway.
E=Diane may well have lied about her fathers occupation if not his name too (if she ever knew it and did not make it all up !

Scotlands Records Office tell me he died intestate??HOW if his will was confirmed in Stornoway resealed in London and then returned to Scotland.
The Probate service in York tell me that it was sent to Scotland from them.

Its all fishy this Will if you ask me

On the entry for the Will posted above, I noticed it says Liverpool as place of death...

(Last week I was at Holborn Wills place, would have willingly got it if I could and posted off for you, but trains snowed up here at present)

Chris :)

(edits with apologies about Liverpool, as you have details, sorry) :-)

4 more phone calls later to Scotland and Kerry is going to try again tomorrow by asking the people at NA Scotland to search the registers that she is not able to access , I know there is something there for him as I was read some of it over the phone in a call to them a couple of weeks back, but then got the run around all over the rest Of Scotland !

Woody thank you so much for going to Fort George, were you told the same as me, that the relevant records had been destroyed by fire.
It is difficult to to hazzard a guess as to how and where Robert died as all I have to go on is my parents Marriage cert.
Back in the 1980,s when I went to Fort George they gave me a London Address to write to re. Robert ( I cannot now remember the address) I did write and the reply was that they had no information on Robert Macleod.
I wish Diane could come back for an hour or two and put us on the right track.
It is very kind of you all to keep digging at this problem for me believe me I really am grateful

I've sent you a pm, Evelyn. It was my OH who went as I'm stuck in Inverness - literally, as my car is stuck fast in the frozen snow.

FBG, now I understand! I think I read that actually, but when I saw Stornoway on the email I thought I'd missed something relevant! I keep thinking there's something really obvious that I've missed! Maybe we'll have a lucky break yet.
A lot of records were transferred to Inverness Archives from NAS but Stornoway is actually Ross & Cromarty so I wouldn't think the will would be here. Worth a look though so will check tomorrow as hopefully my car will be free by then!

Phone call from Springfield Hospital this morning.

Staff records held there stop at 1942 apparently, and what they do have only have the dates when they worked there and a name...
They suggest trying

NMC...Nurses and Midwifery Council and RCM .....Royal College of Nursing .

I am off on my hols at silly oclock in the morning,so I will have to try them when I return,or after christmas...

Well I tried.

No news from Kerrys retry of NA Scotland re THE WILL yet,so maybe snowed in or ill.

Email in from a nice lady called Rachel...

Thank you for your enquiry of 13 December requesting copies of the following documents:

SC25/44/30 (Inventory for Robert McLeod, recorded 10 January 1918 at Dingwall, pp.9-13)

I have checked the Calendar of Confirmations which is an annual index of testamentary papers and it appears that Robert McLeod died intestate; therefore an inventory exists for him.

Please accept our sincere apologies on the time it has taken for our response. I spoke to my colleague and it would appear that the paper work for your request had gone astray. There will be no charge for your copies. Please could you email me your home address so we can arrange for paper copies to be sent out to you.
