For the Eva Ada Redgrave born in Northamptonshire, I think this is probably her mother:

Marriages Jun 1893
Brayell Arthur Potterspury 3b 70
Redgrave Amy Lamb Potterspury 3b 70

That's the only Redgrave marriage anywhere/anytime in the right vicinity.

1891:

Name: Amy L Redgrave
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Joseph
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Potterspury, Northamptonshire, England

Civil parish: Wolverton
Town: Stony Stratford
> County/Island: Buckinghamshire
Registration district: Potterspury

Joseph Redgrave 69
Elizabeth Redgrave 65
Elizabeth R Redgrave 36
Edwin J Redgrave 35
Joseph H Redgrave 33
Amy L Redgrave 31
Josephine E Linwood 18
Mildred Coons 22

Name: Arthur Brazell
Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Head
Where born: Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England

Civil parish: Stony Stratford West
Town: Stony Stratford
County/Island: Buckinghamshire
Registration district: Potterspury

Arthur Brazell 29
Ambrose Brazell 18

You do need to get that Eva Ada Redgrave birth certificate. An exact date and place of birth can come in handy. Also mother's / parents' names, of course.

Hmm. Problem is that this seems to be that Amy and Arthur in 1901:

Name: Arthur Brazell
Age: 39
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Amghams (it says Amy Lamb)
Where born: Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England
Occupation: Farmer

Civil parish: Moreton Pinkney
County/Island: Northamptonshire

Aha.

Your 1901 Eva Redgrave in Hazelgrove Cum Bramhall (Stockport reg dist):

Name: Eva Redgrave
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Relation: Boarder
Where born: London

Look who the rest of the household is:

Henry Boydell 35 - born Lancashire, Tyldesley
Edith L Boydell 33 - born Kent, Ironbridge ? - schoolmistress

Boydell? An awful lot like Brazell/Brayell (although it does look clearly like Boydell on the image). ... Nah, he's Boydell -- married Edith Lilian Goord in Tunbridge 1894.

Eva could have been at school there. Arthur was a farmer in 1901, and he and Amy had a domestic servant, so they may have been wellish off. Eva being the wife's child before marriage maybe, it was off to boarding school for her.

If my current wildish theory were correct. ;)

Amy in 1911, not living with any other Brazell (or Redgrave):

BRAZELL AMY LAMB 1859 52 Thame Oxfordshire

Deaths Mar 1935
Brazell Amy L 74 Wallingford 2c 427

Viv, yes a got the 2 week free trial with ancestory.

Janey, yes, i agree the surnames are very similar, would she have become a servant though if she was sent to boarding school or am i being naive?? I am waiting for the certificate to come through my door, should be any day now. Just hoping it's the right one..... ;-)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 00:30

She could have been a servant like one of my gr-gfather's sister's kids was in 1901 (the sister married very well, although her husband did lose his inheritance on the ponies): a "lady help". Rather more genteel than scullery maid. ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 00:34

Problem is, we have no way of knowing whether the EAS Redgrave birth cert will be the right one!

Will be interesting to know what the "S" is, though. My bet is that it's the father's surname, and the father isn't named.

And that would leave the possibility that that Eva went by the father's surname at some point.

Michelle Report 6 Jul 2009 00:38

I searched all the Redgraves born in Potterspury and it seems it was quite a large family! There is however a Sheila E A Redgrave so maybe it's her name switched around!! I don't know when she was born as i haven't got full access! There are though two younger girls which could be Eva's sisters! Both were child boarders and ended up as servants?!! oooooo and one of those ended up in Charlton.......

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 00:50

You searched where?

Sheila is quite a modern name - not someone born c1890 I'd think.

The only other Redgrave in the 1911 shown as born in Potterspury is:

INSTITUTION REDGRAVE EDWIN 1876 35 Potterspury Northamptonshire

Offhand, I'm not seeing him in 1891 or 1901. In 1881 there's an Edwin Redgrave in Shoreditch, born 1872, is all.

- edit - I wonder whether the age is off and should be 55, which would make him Amy's brother in the 1891 census, aged 35 with no occupation.

Tell me where you're looking at these other Redgraves.

I have a 14 day free trial at ancestry.com. I just typed in search Redgrave born Potterspury, Northamptonshire. The younger girls names were Kathleen May and Victoria Evelyn Redgrave.

Chorlton - this one?

Births Mar 1894
Redgrave Kathleen May Potterspury 3b 25

Marriages Dec 1914
REDGRAVE Kathleen M Bull Chorlton 8c 1324

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 01:00

Crossing in the post -- yes, and this one:

Births Dec 1895
Redgrave Victoria Evelyn Potterspury 3b 19

(no death or marriage showing)

Interesting. One might indeed suspect the same parents -- but who??

Not Amy Lamb Redgrave, since she was already married to Brazell.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 01:05

Here they are in 1901!

Name: Cissie Redgrave
Age: 7
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1894
Relation: Boarder
Where born: Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, England

Name: Queenie Redgrave
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896
Relation: Boarder
Where born: Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, England

Civil parish: Paulerspury
County/Island: Northamptonshire
Registration district: Potterspury

William Henson 35 - boot and shoe maker
Susan Henson 42
Cissie Redgrave 7
Queenie Redgrave 5

Queenie is, of course, a nickname for Victoria.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 01:12

The odds that those three girls are sisters are just really high.

I'm going to wait for that birth cert with bated breath. ;)

Michelle

Michelle Report 6 Jul 2009 01:13

Yes! I found Kathleen May Redgrave married twice, second time to Roass Jun 1919 in Greater London.

Victoria Evelyn married Healey 1917 Winslow, Bucks.

Crazy how they were all boarders and then servants...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 01:19

But I can't resist ...

1911

REDGRAVE KATHLEEN MAY 1894 17 Potterspury Northamptonshire

And searching for surnames "starting with" every letter of the alphabet, living with Kathleen May Redgrave in Potterspury, we find that she is living with precisely nobody.

Michelle

Michelle Report 6 Jul 2009 01:23

aaaahhh, Thats strange! So she was living on her own in Potterspury in 1911 and then got married to Bull in 1914 in Charlton and then to Joass in 1919.

mmmmm

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Jul 2009 01:24

Ah, I'm using FreeBMD and they don't have the Victoria marriage transcribed yet.

Ancestry, bless it, has her marrying as Evelyn V to "Hesley", unless you check the image I guess; 1917.

Right, so that would be why I missed the marriage at FreeBMD, which doesn't do fuzzy searches - it was as Evelyn.

No Healey-Redgrave births that I find.

Any kids for Kathleen's marriages? If they're post-1920, they could be living, so no specifics should go on the boards here. ;)

It would be nice to have some names to search trees for here.
