Lisa - no need to be in a muddle, when we've found everything (if ever!) I'll try to summarise it for you.

I know the Annie with Daniel senior (or Annies as there could be more than one) isn't actually a blood relative of yours but for my own curiosity I wouldn't mind trying to tidy that loose end up.

PH - never mind sitting there with yer feet up, get the kettle on - this could take a while!

Right, in 1891 Daniel senior is with an Annie and a Mary F Clark. I'm pretty sure that this is that same mother and daughter in 1881:

CLARK, William Head Married M 57 1824 Genl Labr Therfield Hertfordshire
CLARK, Ann Wife Married F 35 1846 Camberton Cambridgeshire
CLARK, Mary Daughter Single F 3 1878 Clapton Middlesex
CORNELL, Charles Father In Law Married M 72 1809 Gardener Jobbing Camberton Cambridgeshire
CORNELL, Mary Mother In Law Married F 68 1813 Histon Cambridgeshire

Registration District: West Ham
Civil Parish: Walthamstow

Address: 2, Rose Cottage, Manor Road, Walthamstow County: Essex

Ann(ie) and Mary's birth years and birthplaces are consistent with the 1891 census.

I think we can rule this Annie out as the one he married in 1921. That Annie's father was Henry Houghton, whereas this family conveniently has the in-laws with them so we can see this lady was born Ann Cornell.

I think it's quite likely (although it needs further proof) that the Annie he married in 1921 is the one he was living with in 1911.

The 1911 census says she was born c1865 in Moretonhampstead, Devonshire. The death record for Annie Jude in 1938 gives age as 70, meaning birth year around 1868.

The 1921 marriage record gives her age as 50, implying born 1870. I don't think the ages are accurate on that marriage record as Daniel's is given as 60 and we know he was born 1858/9 - I think they just rounded their ages to the nearest 10. They didn't sign the marriage register but made their "x" meaning they were illiterate, so they possibly weren't 100% sure about their ages. (Just remembered, they probably couldn't write to fill in their 1911 census form as it was completed on their behalf by a "JH Cadman").

So, we're looking for an Annie Houghton born between c 1863 to 1873 in Moretonhampstead, Devon with a father called Henry. This Annie possibly went on to marry (or take the name of) a Mr Layton.

Marrying again 1921, and looks like that didn't work either then!...(notice on the Marriage, it looks like David, do you think he was confused after all this time, lol, lol) witness George Wisken is in Edmonton 1911.

So looks like Daniel senior was alone 1931 when he died...

Glad you have got the 'Bug' Lisa, this family history is fascinating!, that's why we all love it!. Hope all works out with your contacts, if you do get any Certs., let us know what's on em', lol.

Can't wait to see the pictures! I feel I know some of this lot better than my own ancestors.

Still think this family should be turned into a drama series - who would play the various roles?
