William and James's parents from Poplar were Edward and Eliza.....although Edwards occupation was Labourer....not a fire fighter !!!

Sorry, error on my part, just off nighthift..It was Richard Humphrey, not Cant...Did notice on both Edward Humphreys marriage ( first one to Eliza baker) his witness was Frederick Humphreys..

I have a marriage which has Edward Humphrey aged 42 widower to Sarah Ann Todd in 1901, his first wife (if its the correct wife, Eliza Baker died in 1894) he was listed as "driver"

Thanks Vera, I note the 1881 census listing Edward and Eliza, and see that its the same couple who have just married since it lists Edward as being in the fire brigade, but I see another 1881 census listing Eliza Humphrey "married" aged 24 with her father John Baker.???? is it possible that Eliza was visiting just as the census were being done, and her area already done!! or is this a different Eliza?? :-S

It certainly does look like she has been duplicated on the 1881 census........John Baker was her father his occupation was labourer...as on her marriage certificate.

Where is the "Eliza" part coming into play? On her marriage cert-does it actually list her name as Emma Eliza? She doesn't seem to die (if we've got the correct one) as Emma E.

On the marriage cert-are any addresses given?

Have you been in contact with the other tree owners?

Going back to Emma Humphrey..... The only way to find out if this is your Emma Elizabeth although there is no second name given is to send for a birth certificate..

Maybe she decided to add the Elizabeth/Eliza later.....who knows........The Tunbridge Reg. area includes Brenchley and Brasted.

Says on the marriage certificate Emma Eliza Humphrey, address for both was 2 Avondale or Stevendale (cant quiet make it out) this was in St Johns Church, Poplar, Middlesex..The marriage for William Cant in 1912 was to Emma Humphrey aged 21 at East Farleigh? Kent lists father as Richard and witnesses were Richard Humphrey and Ellen Green (I think) :-S

I still think it's the Brenchley one-daughter of Richard and Emma birth reg Tunbridge 1892.

She just seems to "fit" perfectly.

Having said that...can anyone spot her in 1911? :-)

Her parents are in East Farleigh but she's not with them.

I agree with Maureen - I think it's the Brenchley one, and therefore the Tonbridge birth
She has father Richard, and brothers Richard and Edward, as well as other siblings.


But there's something strange somewhere.
To recap:
She is only ever listed as Emma, in BMD records and censuses. Not Emma Eliza.
Nancy says the marriage cert says Emma Eliza, but she's just Emma on the FreeBMD marriage record.

Her mother's Emma, not Eliza.

There's no Emma Humphrey born in Kent in the years Nancy mentioned, and no Emma Eliza between 1885 and 1895 anywhere in England/Wales, let alone Kent.

In fact, there's no sign of an Emma meeting the criteria in Nancy's OP in any record except the marriage cert Nancy has..

Without any proof of anything one way or the other, it sounds to me like two different Emmas.

One Emma Eliza, with parents Edward and Eliza, but whose existence we can't find except on Nancy's marriage cert..

And the Brenchley Emma with parents Richard and Emma, who is clearly recorded all the way. (At least up to 1901 in censuses, also probably her marriage - to William Cant - and death as Emma Cant.)

Her brother Richard is the only one of the family I can find in 1911:
