Had a look at that workhouse register:

Manchester Workhouse Registers 1800-1911 Transcription

First Name:Cornelius
Last Name:Cannon
Date of Admission Year:1908
Date of Admission Month:Mar
Date of Admission Day:06
Locality Of Record:Manchester New Bridge Street Workhouse
Place:Manchester
County:
Age:
Birth Year: looks like 1878 but see below
From Whence Admitted: Manchester district 1
Number:
Film:M4 - 11 - 25
Date Range:1907 - 1908
Title Of Records:Creed Register
Record set:Manchester Workhouse Registers 1800-1911
Record collection:Workhouses and poor law
Category:Institutes & Organizations
Collections from:United Kingdom

With him is an Elizabeth born 1908.

On the original image his name and year of birth looks to have been something different and then rubbed out and overwritten. Whether it was someone else's details or an amendment to his own it's hard to say. I've saved the image and can send by pm if anyone wants to take a look.

In the column for discharged dead it says 7 March 1908.

It was a long-shot, but thought it worth a try. It was something the OP said about changing names, which made me thing it worth a try. Wouldn't mind taking a peek at the image if you wouldn't mind please Marie.

If discharged dead, we should be able to find a death in 1908, but freebmd is showing nothing for Cannon and is still trying to search for just the first name. Ancestry is not returning anything like Cannon or Gullivan either.

Oh I am sorry - my last sentence on my post timed 18:18 should say discharged/dead. I think that must mean the date when either they were discharged or when they died. (Would someone go in a workhouse for just one night?)

I've sent you the image Flip.

I think it is a dead end, but understand now I've seen the image. There are a few people admitted one day and discharged the next though - maybe homeless for the night or just admitted to the attached hospital? I don't know, but the birth year for that Cornelius is 1878 so obviously the wrong person.

Oh well, back to the drawing board! Although I haven't a clue where to try next :-S

Added, what strikes me as strange is why Susannah claimed to be still married throughout the census with no husband in sight, I would have thought she'd have declared herself as a widow. Strange

It is strange Flip.

Looking at the certificates it seems that none of them were able to read and write so their names could have been spelled differently originally and they wouldn't have known.

We've already looked at those Ancestry trees - none of them have anything more than already posted or found.

If you don't have access to Ancestry then you can search and view public trees on their spin-off site Mundia. http://www.mundia.com/gb/

You have to register but it's completely free.

MC - when I had an Ancestry sub, I got a hit in a workhouse (I think in 1911), and paged beck to the beginning of the images where there was summary stuff for the workhouse/infirmary, and (I think I recall) they had four classes of people there - staff, patients, long term inmates and casual inmates.
