Potty Report 28 Aug 2013 11:37

Do hope that cert comes before Friday as I am off on holiday from Saturday morning.

Haven't much time today as will be out most of it. A quick glance at the 1871 and I would suggest Ellen Eliza's birth cert as she has a second name so the birth might be easier to identify.

Will leave mgnv to help with the Canadian side as I have little knowledge of searching there.

When you get the 1916 death cert, maybe this will have some relevance:

Kay???? I'm not sure. I'll have a look and see if I can find them. Not sure if I know what i'm doing but will give it a try.
Whats the ages?

I wonder when contraception started? My Mother in laws Mum had three children before she knew the truth. She thought she was having babies because she got Married! She was scared to death on her wedding night and didn't know what he was doing....bless her.
When my Mum Married she used a doosh/doush pump as that was all there was in 1935....yuk!
Sorry if any men are reading this :-D

Have ordered the 2 certs.
Ellen Eliza Buckley birth 1869 Q4 Greenwich 1d-801 and Henry Buckley death 1916 Q4 Epsom 2a-36....
Mr Postie gets my FULL attention until eta 4th Sept. Think i'll cut the hedge down lol

mgnv...I have already got loads on the Stevens line and have more to come from Canada from the Dunnville History centre. A lady there is doing the history of Dunnville and says the Stevens Family played a big part in the history of the town.....and the Province of Haldimand... Lucky me er?
Many thanks for all your input though All info is a treasure.

Potty Report 29 Aug 2013 11:59

MrsBB,

my father could never remember if he was one of 13 or had 13 brothers and sisters - it was the second, My grandmother had 14 children and all but two survived to adulthood. She was 49 when the last was born. In 1911 nine of them plus my grandparents were living in 3 rooms! Don't think she had heard of contraception!

Drat! I shall be away when those certs arrive. Hopefully, we will be able to get a wifi connection somewhere so I can check in.

Ada went out on the ship Sardinian in 1895. Just a guess but if those other Buckleys were born ooop norff I doubt they belong to our Ada.
I originally thought you meant they were on the same ship same year! but after checking they were not.
I wouldn't be surprised if any of Ada's other siblings/half siblings were sent away too....but hey that's another story for another time maybe.....
Thanks for your input though Kay.

MrsBucketBouquet Report 6 Sep 2013 11:01

Both certs arrived this morning and hey presto!

Birth of Ellen Eliza Buckley
27/08/1869
Henry Buckley and Elizabeth Marstine/Marstin<<<the 'e' is a tall squiggle.

Aged 82.
Occupation - of Greenwich union, Labourer.
Address at death....Belmont workhouse Infirmary.

So we were right! he was very poorly. Must have suffered with Bronchitis for years.

I know how bad that is as I suffered with that for my 1st 7 years. Born with it.

Well! we started looking in Scotland and ended up in Sutton Surry lol WELL DONE everyone and many thanks x

That's brill!

And a salutary lesson for your SIL about not blindly following trees she finds on the internet. ;-)

Has she been able to take it all in?

Re the describing Ada Buckley/Harling issue on trees, I think it's probably down to the tree compiler.

If it were me, I'd be tempted to go with Buckley as that's the name she used most, pre-marriage, but obviously with Henry Harling as her father. Then follow the Harling line for Ada's paternal ancestry...

Notes can be added to explain the birth registration under Harling, but the use of Buckley as her maiden surname thereafter.

Will you pm Potty with the details of the certs so she can catch up when she gets back?

I'll miss this thread too! :-(

MrsBucketBouquet Report 6 Sep 2013 14:44

Because im bored I thought id look see what happened to Ellen Eliza Buckley.
Theres a nice twist at the end...

Ellen Eliza Buckley Married Percy Marstin (Cousin?) 1894. They had 2 Children...
Alfred John Marstin b1896 and Nellie Marstin b1899.

Nellie Marstin Married Alfred Henry Harris 25th December 1920 and had a Daughter in 1923 and named her Nellie ADA Harris. So this looks like OUR Ada was never forgotten.......awwww isn't that nice?

Best of all I have photos of Nellie Marstin/Harris, Alfred Henry Harris and Nellie Ada Harris! All found on another members Ancestry tree.

All now passed on to SIL :-D

What to do now?..... :-|
Finish decorating :-(

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 6 Sep 2013 14:56

Potty found the marriage of Ellen Eliza to cousin Percy earlier in the thread - if I remember rightly it's what helped her identify the mistranscribed Buckley family in the 1871 census.

Percy was the son of Elizabeth Buckley nee Marstin's sister Eliza Jane. If you remember, Eliza Jane Marstin's husband was John Thomas Marstin - now have
we worked out the possible blood connection between John Thomas Marstin and his wife and her sister yet???

EDIT: or did the Ancestry tree take care of that?

SIL is very lucky to have you as her research assistant :-D

Potty Report 8 Sep 2013 20:57

Hi Mrs BB & Kucinta

What a result! Great! Poor Henry, though. In the workhouse infirmary for 30+ years and his wife goes off with another man!

Mrs BB, you will have to do what Kucinta and I do - help others with their brick walls!

Now, I have got a Harry Postans in 1891 living with his aunt, Eliza Livesey and then he disappears. Oh, and not birth to be found!

MrsBucketBouquet Report 16 Sep 2013 10:42

Hi everyone.
Welcom back from your Hols Potty. Hope you had a nice time.

I couldn't resist sending for Elizabeth Buckleys death cert. It arrived this morning.

Aged 55 died 4th Dec 1893. Wife of Henry Alfred Buckley a Hammerman.
Right Paralysis and Diarrhoea. Malignant disease of the stomach.
Her address 2, Queen Street.

Now heres a turn up for the books......
Informant in attendance....H.A. Buckley...SON!!
Is this the lost Henry we couldn't find?
His address is 82 Lucas Street, Deptford.

:-D

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 16 Sep 2013 11:22

I think this might be Henry, though not at Lucas Street. It's young Charles Harling I'd like to locate:

Census 1891:

Address: 624, Beaumont Terrace, Charlton Next Woolwich, Charlton
County: London

TUWEY, Herbert Head Married M 28 1863 Butchers Assistant
Cheddington, Buckinghamshire
TUWEY, Elizabeth Wife Married F 27 1864 Greenwich, Kent
TUWEY, Herbert Son Single M 3 1888 Woodgreen, Middlesex
TUWEY, Adah Daughter F 0 (9M) 1891 Charlton, Kent
BUCKLEY, Henry Lodger Single M 23 1868 Shoemaker Greenwich, Kent<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
PEVY, Nellie Visitor Single F 12 1879 Wingrave, Buckinghamshire

Henry was still boarding with the same family in 1901, this time at 6 Rectory Grove, and he was working as a labourer in a gun/armament factory. The family's name looks like Turvey on both census images.
