Looking for a Mr Calvert possibly on the ship Rhynland bound for Philadelphia in 1901. If he is not found on the passenger list then if possible look for him as living in Wyola which I believe is in Montana on the 1900 USA census

Lemuel Wm Hampson is my wife's grandfather who went out to Wyola in 1901 but returned back to England before 1905. She wanted to know who this Mr Calvert was and his occupation, it states Lemuel as being a Silver refiner so wondering if there were any silver mines in Wyola.

There seems to have been silver mines, or at least metal ore mines in the area.

A simple internet search produces the following previews

Having difficulty identifying Wyola in any of the Census. It does come under School District 29 for 1940 but that one popped up and now its gone again.

John Report 17 Sep 2013 13:53

Thanks for the info, yes the 1911 census is correct, this is the family of my wife..Her grandfather Lemuel having returned from Wyola and married.Lemual got killed in a steel works in Sheffield in 1917. In 1920 a Lemuel Wm Hampson was heading for Quebec Canada, we thought he was an imposter with Lemuels passport but it turned out to be the second husband of Gertrude his wife who had only been married a year to Edwin Wood, he went out to Canada on Lemuels passport. It is trying to find out where Lemuel lived in Wyola and who was this Mr Calvert, a friend or an employer, we are unable to find a return passage for Lemuel William Hampson

John

John Report 17 Sep 2013 14:29

Looking at info of Wyola, it mentions Wyoming and also Montana. Is there a 1900 census for these states. We wondered if this Mr Calvert could have come over to England to Sheffield to visit the Steel works and met Lemuel. We have a photo of Lemuel taken in a studio in Philadelphia also have one of him dressed similar to a cowboy holding a rifle as though living in the Montana or Wyoming areas.. If we could find out more about this Mr Calvert it would give us some idea as to why Lemuel was over there. Pity the manifest didn't, give a first or initial to his surname.

John Report 18 Sep 2013 00:34

Hi Vera2010. I looked up the passenger list of the Rhynland heading for Philadelphia and saw the name of a William Calvert crossed out, having found Lemuel Wiliam Hampson on the same ship, his name was crossed out when I originally looked it up but been unable to find that page since, however I have seen another page of the manifest where it looks like he had been put into another cabin so possibly William Calvert had also been moved cabins. I do believe now that Mr Calvert stated by Lemuel Hampson as being a friend of Wyola is this person travelling on the Rhynland

vera2010

vera2010 Report 18 Sep 2013 04:18

Hello John

I did find that 2nd page. Much clearer. It appears, from the crossed out page, that Lemuel moved into another class of cabin.

Wyola had a very small population back in the day and does not seem to stand alone prior to 1940 in the census records. Even the USA census advice site does not seem to include it. I

I'm sure your Mr Calvert is there somewhere if only we could find Wyola listed.

Many thanks Vera. For some reason Ancestry has changed its format, it seems that I will have to upgrade to World wide to see most of the USA census, years ago when I first started on Ancestry I could get them, but just for a couple of look ups its seems more money and I am unable to get it on pay as you go

vera2010

vera2010 Report 18 Sep 2013 15:44

I have access to all the census on Ancestry but unfortunately I can't find out where Wyola is in the Census. I did find another 0005 in 1820 but no Calvert there. Perhaps John if you change your header to Montana or indicate USA, our Genes friends in the States may be able to help. I am getting so curious now, I want to know who Mr Calvert is!

I did wonder as there was no initial on the passenger list, that perhaps he was some sort of agent employing people to work in the mines. Just a thought.

John Report 18 Sep 2013 20:05

Hi Vera. Yes I am also interested as to who he is, he must have come over to recruit and something to do with refining of silver. When I looked on the passenger list and saw where Mr Calvert was crossed out and went back and another look and he's down as Wm Calvert so he is William Calvert. Having looked at the net I found Wyola Wyoming so perhaps it is on the border.

John Report 18 Sep 2013 22:09

Hi Vera. I tried heading Montana in hope that someone in America would pick it up and very quickly put in my place by people in this country for not saying please and that I had already had a tread about Mr Calvert, so can 't win.Well I will just have to hope that someone in America can help. Many thanks for your help.If I hear anything out him I will contact you

vera2010 Report 18 Sep 2013 23:44

Sorry about that John. I gather you can change your existing header ie this one but not quite sure how. Another thread probably just complicates things. I am at least learning something about America. I read a blog about Wyola, Big Horn County and it quite emphatically said that do not mix it up with Big Horn County which I gather runs on in to Wyoming.

Try going into this thread again and see if you can edit it to hilghlight USA or go onto Genealogy Chat and ask for advice.

Going to take another look at that Wiliam Calvert

Hi Vera. I'm 76 now so all this modern technology is frustrating at times. my grandchildren are a wiz and help me at times if I can't father things out. I will try and go on to the Genealogy chat and see what I can find out

vera2010 Report 19 Sep 2013 00:41

I've seen your Montana thread John. So that's good and there is a link to this one. I like answering the queries but also not too hot on the technical aspects of it all.

Just had a look at William Calvert. There is one born in England who seems to have hopped over the Atlantic on many occasions (4) His occupation varies but dob and marital status remains. Will delve in a bit more. He does not seem to have an occupation which would easily finance the numerous trips (mechanic, machinist etc.)

Will see what I can turn up and look again at the passenger list with Lemuel aboard.

vera2010

vera2010 Report 19 Sep 2013 02:20

John not able to see Wm Calvert on same ship as Lemuel in 1901.

There is a William Calvert travelling to and fro and on one occasion with sister Mary Legard. That William lives with sister Mary and her husband Phillip and can be seen with them on the census 1900-1920. He is married although not with wife and works as a Pipe Inspector. So not sure that this is *Mr Calvert in Wyola*. The family originate from the Yorkshire area.

There is a very good reason why GR says that not more than one thread should be started on any one person or family ....................... and why helpers ask that people stick to that

Posting more than one thread, or asking the same question over and over again, just results in helpers wasting time finding information that has already been found ................. ie, duplicating research already carried out.

Helpers are only members like yourself, using their own subscriptions in other sites to find information.

BTW .................. you are still quite a youngster at 76, there are lots of members much older than you, and even more around your age or only slightly younger.
