I know that Esther Roe married her cousin William and I know Esther's connection with my family, but I don't know about William b1869. They both went to America in 1914. any information would be helpful.

Stephen Report 25 Sep 2013 16:09

That all fits with what I have found except that William was born in London. I am trying to establish who his parents were so that I can understand why he was Esther's cousin. I was expecting him to have been born in Northamptonshire.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 25 Sep 2013 16:12

You have his parents in the 1871 census above, William S Roe born c1835 Woodford and Mary born Sussex.

Stephen

Stephen Report 25 Sep 2013 16:16

That is really interesting :-) I know that my ancestors were from Woodford, but I haven't come across William S Roe before. Who were his parents?

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 25 Sep 2013 16:18

????

This possible marriage seems a bit out of area for both Mary and William S, and a bit tight for birth of son Albert who is 5 in 1871

EDIT: I now think this is wrong, as I believe William is actually William A, not William S, on the actual image of the 1871 census (ie wrongly transcribed).

I've posted what I believe to be the correct marriage for William Allen Roe born c1834 Woodford, Northants, further down the thread.

Kucinta Report 25 Sep 2013 16:20

Sadly this might be William senior in 1841:

Address: Thrapston Union Workhouse, Thrapston County: Northamptonshire

ROE, William M 7 1834 Northamptonshire

There is also a 9 yr old Jane Roe in the workhouse.

Stephen

Stephen Report 25 Sep 2013 16:25

I would really like to know who William S Roe's parents were as I have already established a family tree, but he isn't on it. I would also like to know if there is a link between the Tipperary Roes an ones in Northamptonshire.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 25 Sep 2013 16:27

I think William 'S', is actually William A on the image of the 1871 census, and has been mistranscribed.

In which case, if he wasn't baptised straight away, this MIGHT be him:

Name: William Allen Roe
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 18 Nov 1837
Christening Place: Woodford (near Thrapston), Northampton, England

EDIT: The same parents had at least one more child baptised the same day as William, I think she might be the Jane who was with William in the workhouse in the 1841 census I posted :

Name: Jane Roe
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 18 Nov 1837

Kucinta Report 25 Sep 2013 16:32

This is purely speculative as we have no indication of age of the deceased, but might this be the death of William and Jane's mother?

Deaths Mar 1839 Roe Esther Thrapston 15 250

(Woodford comes under Thrapston R D).

Same caveats for a possible death of their father - no indication of age.

Deaths Dec 1837 Roe Thomas Thrapston 15 2[14]4

Found details of burials:

Esther was an adult, as was Thomas. If they are the same Thomas and Esther who were the parents of Jane and William, this could explain why the children had both ended up in the workhouse by 1841.

Thomas and Esther Roe did have a son called Richard, baptised in that batch lot on 18/11/1837, along with Jane and William Allen Roe. Could he be the Richard who is Esther's father?

A fourth child baptised in that same job lot.

Since you know where Richard fits in with your family, is he the Richard who is the son of Esther and Thomas Roe? Seems pretty likely to me. Richard's daughter Esther may even have been named for her paternal grandmother.

EDIT: Given that Thomas Roe was buried on the 26th Nov 1837, and at least four of his children were baptised in a job lot on the 18th Nov 1837, I wondered if the two events were linked in some way. Did they decide to get the children done before Thomas passed on, or did a clergyman attending Thomas on his possible deathbed (though we don't know the cause of death) perhaps bring pressure to bear?
