Unfortunately it's not possible to use mms as a search term for births after 1854 on ScotlandsPeople, so without any clues such as first names, there's no way of knowing which, if any, of these births are relevant to your family without buying lots of expensive birth certs,.

1910-40 there were 15 other Frizzell births in the same reg district as George's birth, but of course any siblings may not have been born there.
The 1912 birth record for Marion Graham Frizzell can be viewed on SP for a few credits, as it's more than 100 years ago, but the others would require the purchase of the cert:

I don't see the birth of a Clarice Frizzell 1910-40

1917 FRIZZELL CHRISTINA S F GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW 564/01 0558

1939 FRIZZELL CHRISTINA S F GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW 564/01 0335

I don't see the marriage of George to an Emily in Scotland.

There's this marriage ??? You'd have to buy the cert to check the parents' names:

1945 FRIZZELL GEORGE ALEXANDER
STEWART MARTHA
MILTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/10 0033

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Aug 2015 11:38

Alternatively there's this perhaps possible marriage in England - Nelson rather than Noble ??::

Marriages Dec 1951 (>99%)
FRIZZELL George A L MAIRS Durham S.E. 1a 1284
FRIZZELL George A L NELSON Durham S.E. 1a 1284
MAIRS Emily FRIZZELL Durham S.E. 1a 1284
NELSON Emily FRIZZELL Durham S.E. 1a 1284

You can't input a mothers maiden name on Scotlands People to help find births.

The best you can hope for is a list of Frizzell births - any one of which could be "yours"

The info shown will be surname and Christian names, City/County born and the GROS data which would enable you to order the certificate (as in ArgyllGran's post above re George's 1920 birth and EDIT - all those she has posted for the other possibles)

As said before a list of possibles will cost (you or anyone looking for you) 1 credit per page (up to 25 results) but £12 to buy each certificate. If you can visit the Records Office in Scotland a day's entry will cost about £15 and you can look up as much as you have time for and take notes from the more recent certificates but not make copies. If older than the time limits set then 5 credits will let you see the full copy certificates and to download them (again this uses other members own credits).

I suspect George's wife was Emily Nelson? I guessed it was Noble but perhaps I was incorrect. I have a passport for Christine Frizzell dob 1952, 24th March Stockton on Tees. Passport issued 2nd March 1967 but unfortunately no parents details. Christine was child 3 of George and Emily.

Laird

Laird Report 17 Aug 2015 12:33

It should be easy enough to obtain a birth certificate for Christine.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Aug 2015 15:50

If you look her birth up on FreeBMD, you'll see it says her mother's maiden name was Nelson.
With the page and volume numbers it gives, you can order a copy of the birth cert.

ArgyllGran Report 17 Aug 2015 15:59

I'm assuming you're not in contact with Christine?

If you go to Search at the top of this page, then Search All Members' Trees, and enter her name and YOB, you'll get 3 results which are all your Christine, and the tree owner in each case is a Christine - presumably her, or maybe a daughter..

If you click on "Find out more", you can send her a message.

Called in at my local registry office today, it's quite literally around the corner from my office and ordered marriage license for Paul Simms and Christine Frizzell as well as her birth certificate.

Project coming together nicely, thanks for all your help guys. :-)
Next goal marriage licenses for grandparents.

George Frizzell to Emily Nelson
Harry Simms to Stella Hawkins

Marriages Dec 1951 (>99%)

NELSON Emily FRIZZELL Durham S.E. 1a 1284

This looks like the right marriage info.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Aug 2015 21:10

Yes, that's the one I posted earlier.

Emily had previously been married to William Mairs, which is why the marriage record shows both surnames.

This is her previous marriage:

Marriages Mar 1946 (>99%)
Mairs William G R Nelson Durham S.E. 10a 233
Nelson Emily Mairs Durham S.E. 10a 233

I don't see a death for William between the two marriages, so suppose they divorced. There's a possible remarriage for him in Ealing, Middlesex in 1955, and then a possible death in Surrey in 1993.

Laird

Laird Report 17 Aug 2015 23:59

Best guess Emily had at the very least 8 husbands. I could be wrong but I suspect that to be the case. Mainly i'm interested in her link to George Alexander Lever Frizzell, my interest being my Scottish roots. Obviously now I also see Nordic roots too. Its a shame Frank Simms is as far as the records go (no recorded father).....but hey ho 3 generations was the plan and quite surprised what I have learnt thus far.

Tonight I ordered George & Emily's marriage certificate.

Kerensky,
Do have the birth details of George Alexander Frizzell b 1920 in Greenock?

I was at the GRO today and I took a note of this beforehand.
As with all birth records the parents marriage is added to the cert.
George was born 15 yrs after the marriage and as far as I can tell, he was the youngest child.
There were 3 different Frizzell families in Greenock at this time.
Two families were brothers but, yours does not seem to have any connection to them.

James Frizzell and Hessie Brown married in Greenock 1884
James was the son of Hugh Frizzell and Ann Wilson
Hessie was the daughter of Robert Brown and Margaret McAllister

.Name: James Frizzel
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Hessie Frizzel
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland **
Registration Number: 564/2
Registration district: Greenock West
Civil Parish: Greenock West
Town: Greenock
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 3 Prospecthill St
Occupation: Sugar House Labourer
ED: 44
Household schedule number: 81
LINE: 11
Roll: CSSCT1891_183
Household Members:
Name Age
James Frizzel 32
Hessie Frizzel 31 B Ireland
******HUGH Frizzel Son 6 ******* B Greenock
Annie Frizzel 6 Mo

Cant find family in 1901?

10 Jun 1904:
HUGH FRIZZELL married Christina Sutherland in Greenock
Christina was the daughter of Peter Sutherland and Mary Maxwell.

Children all born in Greenock:
Mary Maxwell Frizzel b 27 Sep 1905
James Frizzell b 10 Nov 1907 (Twin)
John Miller Frizzell b 10 Nov 1907 ( Twin)
Carherine Maxwell Frizzell b1 9 Feb 1909
Marion Graham Frizzell b 12 Oct 1912
Robert Brown Frizzell b 26 Mar 1915
GEORGE ALEXANDER Frizell b 27 Jul 1920

So it looks like your early Scottish roots are in fact... IRISH!

Edit: From the Frizzell births provided by Argyllgran I suspect that Williamina Sutherland Frizzell b 1924 may be a child from this family that I missed!

Glasgowlass thanks for info, so I now see Scottish, Irish and Nordic roots. fascinating. In answer to your question yes I have the birth certificate of George Alexander Lever Frizzell plus the marriage license of Hugh and Christina. Regards Andrew.

Your info seems to tie up with what I can see on the 1904 marriage license for Hugh and Chrstina Frizzell. I'm rather curious about the Irish roots. I wonder how accurate that would be? I guess the further back you go the more sketchy the records become...

FRIZELL James of Ireland (age 32) (labourer) (3 Prospecthill St) Greenock 1891 1891 census 564/2/44/81

The spelling of Frizel, Frizzel and Frizzell?

greyghost

greyghost Report 20 Aug 2015 11:26

I can imagine that this might be another corruption of the surname - all versions can be seen on a Scottish 1901 census.
Frizzle

People were not so literate, so
maybe didn't know how to spell the name, couldn't read to check how it had been written, it was just written as it was heard, bad handwriting transcribed by someone else from an original etc etc.

The more unusual a name the more chance for differences but you only have to look at Clark/Clarke - I have the same family spelt both ways in my tree and when a Clark married a Clarke.................

Even today things are spelt differently depending on all those things.

Flora Thompson (junior) in 1871 census:

1869 THOMSON FLORA F GREENOCK OLD OR WEST /RENFREW 564/03 1238

Born 2 December,at 29 Hamilton Street, illegitimate daughter of Flora Thomson, domestic servant.

So I don't think her mother's the same as Flora Frizzle in 1881.
Flora Frizzle's listed as the sister of all the others, so it's not as if Flora Thomson had married into the family.

Unless there was another son, and "sister" means "sister-in-law" and they didn't marry in Scotland!
