Hello Zoe As you say, with a fresh pair of eyes I would be most grateful if you can help me make progress “backwards”. What I know so far G grandfather John Black was born in Scotland, he was 27 in 1901 living in York with wife Elizabeth Black 28 born Selby, and son Thomas E Black aged 3 born Langham Norfolk. I want to be able to track John Black in Scotland but there were over 40 born in 1873 and I don’t know his town. I was hoping there maybe more information of the marriage certificate, but I can not find reference to it. Elizabeth’s maiden name was Cooper. A search on Scotlands People didn’t return at match for this couple, no John Blacks and Elizabeth Cooper in the time span. Anyway I think it is more likely that he travelled to England rather than she to Scotland. Can you see anything on BMD records, I don’t know what year. I have Thomas’s birth certificate but there are no clues on it. Also John Black died before 1905 when Elizabeth remarried. I have a death certificate for a John Black from 1904, right age and York., but I don’t have anything to confirm it is the right John Black. His death was notified by the next door neighbour. A Elizabeth Thompson. I haven’t paid to view the 1901 record so don’t know the address at that time. Can you check for me please? On the death certificate it looks like 4 Dowells Yard, Something Street? for John Black, and witness 3 Dowells Yard Also can you look to see if John Black aged 17 was in England in 1891 census. Where was Elizabeth Cooper aged 18 in 1891. I hope all this is not too much to ask of you. Many thanks in advance for whatever you can do for me. Pauline

Hi There, Not sure if you can help.... I'm trying to find out what ever information I can about Joseph Twigg-Balmer. I have have very little info to go on, but here's what I do have. Elizabeth Dunsdon born c 1885, Steventon, Berks married Joseph Twigg-Balmer. They had a daughter Kathleen Betty Twigg-Balmer, born 1919. The address that Kathleen was born at was 6 Fairmead Road (23-01-1919) Kathleen's birth (1b 172 ) cert states that her father Joseph Twigg-Balmer was a Mining engineer of West Lodge, Barnsbury Square, Islington (stange I know). Elizabeth had married a Victor Weeden in 1912 (in Thanet) and then went on to marry Henry Thomas Brent in 1923. I cannot trace any Joseph Twigg-Balmer though. Unfortunatley I do not have a birth year or place. Which means I have been relying mainly on his somewhat unusal surname. Elizabeth had two children with Victor Weeden, Anthony Claude Weeden born in 1915 and Margaret (Peggy) Weeden in 1912. Both Anthony and Kathleen were adopted by Elizabeth's third husband Henry Brent (Not Margaret though). Any help greatly received. I'm not really sure what to do or where to go next as I have so little info to work with. Any suggestions welcome :0) Thanks, Danni

Seems like the first wife was Elizabeth and the visitor was born in the same place maybe they are sisters. ~ try to trace them back Can't seem to find either marriage for William Zoe

Pauline On image looks like 3 Thompsons Cottages but they may have moved in the few years between census and death, does Elizabeths marriage cert say Widow? But think this might help marriage ref Marriages Jun 1900 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Black John York 9d 103 Cooper Elizabeth York 9d 103 Once you have this marriage cert it will give fathers names and occs and hopefully make it easier to find them in 1891 There is a few John Blacks born Scotland around the right age in 1891 but need more info to be sure Zoe

Danielle All I can suggest is that you try to get electoral roll lookup for the address in 1919 when their child was born as it may list him other than that don't know what to suggest. Do you have all three of Elizabeth's marriage certs? Does each one say widow? Have you looked through the deaths records for Joseph? Zoe

Hi Zoe, Thanks for the advice. No, I don't have all the cert - I have looked up the Dunsdon/Weeden marriage and have also found the Dunsdon/Brent marriage - but nothing for Twigg-Balmer. It's interesting, on Kathleen's birth cert it states her mother's name was Dunsdon (although she had marriage Victor Weeden!) Would it be possible for someone to point me in the right direction to search the electoral roll for 1919? No I haven't searched for Joseph's death - maybe that's the only way forward. I thought that Twigg-Balmer would have been an usual surname and relatively easy to trace - looks like I was wrong. Thanks for your help though Zoe - greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Danni

Thank you Zoe for your help with John Black. That marriage certificate may be them although it was a few years after the birth of Thomas. But I know that doesn’t mean it wasn’t them. Pauline

Hi Zoe, Thanks for info........do you have their address in Camberwell at time of census? Robert is my Grandfather b 1870ish in Camberwell, (I'm waiting for his birth cert. now), he married Caroline, so this is def. him. His Father and Mother differ in your info to what I've previously been told (again birth cert. will confirm), but I'm beginning to think that you are right. Ken.
