Hi Penny I am really sorry but I have been through both the 1841 and 1851 censuses twice for your folks and cannot find Yates in Great or Little Bourton(1841) or Eaglestone in Bladon(1851). Some of the 1841 pages are totally unreadable(even with the eye of faith) and therefore cannot guarantee they are not there.....but. Regards Mary

Hi Mary, I would be very grateful if you could look up Oxfordshire 1841/51/61 looking for a Henry Quartermain (may have been spelt Quartermaine). Born in St Aldates Oxford between 1842 and 1848 (I think 1842 possibly more accurate). His father was Thomas Quartermain. I have picked him up in London on 1881 and 1891 census, but can't get further back. Thank you very much. Sheena

Hi Deborah The only family that I could find on the 1851 census in Wolvercote with a child of the right age is as follows: William Hicks Head 66 Widower Ag lab born Wolvercote J Hicks Son 27 Married Ag lab b Wolvercote R Hicks Wife (I think it means Wife of J Hicks) b Derby John Hicks 3 Grandson b Wolvercote W Hicks 2 Grandson b Wolvercote The census entries are shown as I have written them with initials only (not very helpful) and I cannot check on the 1861 as the books for the Woodstock area which includes Wolvercote have been lost and no records are available. I hope this info will be of use to you. Regards Mary

Hi Sheena I am sorry but I have not been able to trace any Quartermain,Quartermaine,Quartermane,Quarterman families in St Aldates,Oxford in any of my Oxfordshire censuses. I suggest you try to trace Henry's birth record and send for his certificate which will give you a more accurate record of where he was born. Searching the earlier records is not easy as they are not indexed and the 1861 census on Ancestry has glaring mistranscriptions throughout( I cannot find my families by searching as ALL of the surnames are misspelled). Regards Mary

Hi Mary, Thanks very much for your help. I will keep trying to find his birth. He just seems to keep changing his age on marriage certs, and 1881 census and death! If I can get more details and you are still doing look-ups I will perhaps try again. Regards Sheena
