Thanks Jess, knew they had to be somewhere, guess John wasn't on it, shame about that don't know anything about him not even year of birth or death. Still at least I know there was another child. So it shows up Elizabeth born in London, thats on the 91cen as well, 71 & 81 show Brighton and she was baptised in Brighton, maybe they moved shortly after her birth. Josie

Hi Jess. I'd really appreciate an extra pair of eyes on this one. I have Charles Cains b 1839 Alverstoke, Gosport, a sailmaker. Matilda is his wife b 1838 Bath Somerset. Children are Florence Matilda Pady Cains b 26/4/1868. Evelyn Louise Mary b 10/9/1871. Beatrice Lydia Amy b 8/6/1873. I can trace Charles on the 1861 with his parents. On the 1871 he is at The Ship Inn Gosport as a sailmaker. The whole family have disappeared on the 1881. On the 1891 he is a retired publican but on the 1901 he is a sailmaker again. I'm sure that I have missed something but have you any ideas as to where the family went in 1881. I'm assuming that he stayed at the pub but are we able to access a census by the address and not the person. Thanks in advance. Jan.Jan

Sorry to jump in here, but reading the last page on this thread just had to. Entire families do disappear, reason is if your searching on Ancestry surnames can be spelt wrong. Two entire families had the completely wrong surname and some kind person on here found one of them for me, so as I was able at that time to search ancestry myself I back tracked by looking up neighbours and was able to find the other family. The image was correct but surname search wasn't. Sorry to use up your thread. Josie

Dear Alter Ego... I'm just a canny lad really.... your reference to my William Robson and wife Elizabeth maiden name Dickinson... They were married in 1870. When you said Elizabeth was lodging at the Black Horse Inn Was that in Chester-le-Street county Durham.. As the family had the Plough Inn at Low Flatts in Chester-le-Street in 1881.. William was widowed and moved with all his children to The victoria Hotel in Brandon, Langley Park, County Durham. around 1891....and was still there in 1901.But how long was he there after that...
