Klara Report 18 Dec 2010 18:18

Just outside Dover
Went to visit family in Deal this morning on understanding if snow started would go home as we live on higher ground. Started snowing around 1330 and soon ground white, main road not too bad but not been gritted, closer to Dover conditions much worse. Got home and found 2-3 inches on ground in little under an hour! Snowed like the clappers until about 1600, more to come I think. OH just on way home - getting a lift as I had 4x4 and leaving small car at work. Will see what tomorrow brings - more snow I should think. Also sounds like most of the main roads in E Kent pretty bad.

Gwyn in Kent Report 18 Dec 2010 19:46

Not long home from a shopping trip to Maidstone.
We set off on clear motorways about 10am. and had just a token dusting of snow around my home.
Parked out of town at a Park-and-Ride in Maidstone and settled into our necessary shopping and then suddenly realised that people were coming into the department store covered in snow.
Park-and Ride buses were stopped and called back to depot by about 3.30 so we set off to walk uphill to get the car. Back of it was covered to about 2 and a half inches.
M20 was flowing oh so slowly, but wasn't too bad near Maidstone, but 2nd lane was travelling rather faster and outside lane seemed to be the run for many huge lorries from the continent racing to get to the ferry or Channel Tunnel........ Do they think there are different lane restrictions in snow?
Near Ashford, south bound the motorway was very slippery and daughter ( driver) was concerned about the speed and poor conditions so we continued on A20 which although snow-covered felt much safer with less traffic.
We took 2 hours to travel about 35 miles, but listening to traffic reports on the radio, we were relatively lucky. Around Canterbury and parts of north Kent there was grid lock and some people had been in queues for over 4 hours trying to get home.

Gwyn and the annoying thing is that a lot of these road closures have been caused by lorries jacknifing or getting stuck. Maybe they should be told to slow down in bad conditions.

my son got stuck on M40 yesterday and just got home today

He said at about 8pm people were parking on the hard shoulder and bedding down for the night !!! It took him 5 hours to do 13 miles but he kept going and get to a friends for the night .
He said it was very dangerouse coz people just stopped and bedded down ignoreing that fact that they were moving be it slow .......
so he said it wasnt just the lorries causing problems

Thanks Kemp I am sure it wasn't. So thoughtless of people but no doubt they had been driving so long theyw ere exhausted. And I suppose the police couldn't get there anyway. Glad he was safe anyway. My Grandson is due to drive back from Uni in Plymouth this week to hampshire and is already trying to work out the right day. All very well for police to say don't drive unless necessary but they just want to get home for Christmas don't they?

No new snow since Saturday down near this part of Channel coast.

Main roads OK, but side roads are mostly untreated and treacherous.

Sun shining and thawing compacted snow on pathway, so I've just easily cleared a walk way to the front door.

Frozen solid here, refuse/recycling suspended. A few flakes gently falling but the sky does look full of it.
