I've been reading, or ploughing my way through, Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. It's been one of those books I thought I "should" read and when I saw it for £1 on a charity stand I bought it.

I found the author's style a bit difficult, very wordy and I thought a bit stilted, but it is the interesting story of her life, mostly from her teens to late twenties. She came from a well-to-do family and fought to go to university at a time when girls of her sort were expected to become wives and mothers and nothing more. During WW1 and after a year at uni. she became a VAD nurse and really saw the horrors of war. In the war she also lost her fiance, her beloved only brother, and a couple of friends. She later travelled the country speaking on behalf of the League of Nations and became something of a worker for peace. I'm glad I persevered with the book as I think it was worth reading.

Good morning all....

While my thread disappeared I have read The Light behind The Window by Lucinda Riley.....I thoroughly enjoyed thi book and literally did not want it to end...

A story of the present day and the findings of secrets, lost loves and trysts from the past going back to the second world war involving the French Resistance and also the SOE.......Such an easy read with a flowing story...Lucinda Riley has written 3 books and out of the 3 this one is my personal favourite :-)

I am now reading The Last Telegram by Liz Trenow so will let you know how I get on.......

I'm just about to start *The Art Of Racing In The Rain* by Garth Stein.

It's all written through the eyes of a dog lol....heard good things about it ...and sounds like my kind of book...so here goes..........

Muffy "The Art of Racing in The titlethe Rain" sounds interesting and different. Looking forward to finding out what you think of it.

Have just finished reading "Mistress of the Art of Death" by Ariana Franklin.

It is set in 1171 in Cambridge in England. Adelia Aguilar, who as a new born baby, was found by Mount Vesuvius, is the "Doctor of Death" - she examines dead bodies to discover how they died.
Sent to Cambridge to discover who is maiming and killing young children.

I enjoyed the story and was interested in the charecters in it.

Will be looking out for more Adelia books by Ariana Franklin.

If you like history and mystery I reckon you will like this.

Have just started "The Way Things Look to Me"
by Roopa Farrooki
It is about three siblings aged between 19-23. Their parents are dead and the siblings are trying to cope with crisis. The youngest child Yasmin has Aspergers, the eldest, Asif is trying to fit his life around her needs and the middle child Lila has escaped from home.

I am enjoying it so far and wonder if they will be able to resolve their problems, while still remaining a "proper" family.

Elizabeth Kostova's, 'The Historian' is a different tale of Dracula or should I say Vlad Tepes. Quite a few interesting turns and a good plot line :-0

have read "The Historian" a very intricate plot but worth reading to the end.

An excellant story. and rather scary in parts.

Have recently read another of Elizabeth Kostova's books, which I also enjoyed (but can't remember what it was called).

Stayed up til nearly 3am this morning to finish The Art Of Racing In The Rain....found myself laughing and crying in turn ! Fantastic book. I'm an unashamed dog lover which I think may have added to my enjoyment....Some have said they found it a bit trite ...but not me...I thought it was so well written even the more unlikely parts didn't really register for me....I truly want to believe what Enzo (the dog) learnt by watching the Discovery channel (lol)...and that's the Mongolian belief that the dog''s next incarnation is as a human if they have learnt enough as a dog....sounds like a plan to me ! x

Just finished " betrayed" n how anyone can do that to a small child, is pure evil,
Now reading " the little house" I normally don't read fiction but nothing else in the villa library lol, anyways few pages in n I realised iv seen the film, I'll still read it to compare it to the film :-D

I'm now reading Lillian's Story, One Womans Journey through the 20th Century by Sally Patricia Gardner....it's a freebie on Amazon....prob won't like it as much as I should because I'm still in the mindset of the last book I read but it's ok so far (4 chapters in) !
