I Was talking to a woman tonight who was telling me about babysitting her grandson.

He's a bit of a handful, so she decided to smoke a joint so she could cope!!

Arrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granny is a couple of years younger than I am................ am I getting old? :-(

Grandson is about 2 years old...... is he old enough to say "Granny, I have the munchies....... what do you have to eat?"

To be honest....... it's hard to tell the difference when this woman is or isn't stoned!

I don't think her son gives a toss......

What hope for the grandson?

Poor little boy, what the grandmother is doing is illegal, and child abuse, she should be reported to Social Services.

I presume then, that if anyone regularly had a couple of glasses of wine, they shouldn't when baby sitting.
if they drink coffee, they should stop when babysitting.
If they were on Prozac, they should stop taking it when baby sitting,

In fact, no-one on any slightly mind-altering substance (and I've had antibiotics with quite alarmig side effects) should not be in charge of a child.

One joint does not a drug crazed idiot make.
Maybe this woman is out of her face most of the time, maybe her personality makes it appear so, but to judge someone so tyranically on a passing comment seems a bit harsh.

Maggie reading Scozz's comments it does not sound like a one off smoke, and as her son is supplying her, it does sound more serious in my opinion.

'......she decided to smoke a joint....'

Maybe she is a regular user, but a joint is hardly getting stoned, likewise, a regular drinker may have a glass of wine, doesn't mean they're legless, or in fact, regularly drunk!!

LollyWithSprinklez Report 22 Mar 2013 12:40

I do not know this woman, her son or her circumstances so do not want to make any judgement of her, Scozz does and is entitled to her own opinions.

I do however know of users well into their 80s who use a joint to alleviate med problems that don't respond to other treatments .... mostly athritis and joint problems (no pun intended) and an even older man who has been a user since his army days a non smoker non drinker his one "vice" being a daily puff, he has two grown children and g grandchildren none of whom appear to have been adversely affected.

I would not approve of blatant smoking of anything in front of young children...although hands up I am no saint and have done so in the past.

♥†۩ Carol Paine ۩†♥ Report 22 Mar 2013 13:14

Some years ago I was going through a real hard patch, sinking back into the depression that hit after my Grandson died. Having stayed strong for my family coping with all that life was throwing at us & keeping down a full time job for six months, I broke down & accepted antidepressants. After a year or so on them I fought to get weaned off of the mind numbing antidepressants & vowed never to go down that road again.
One night my son came to sit beside me as I was sobbing in the garden because I felt I could not cope any more. We talked for a long time, then he went off up the road, came back & handed me a roll up. I smoked it, relaxed & slept through the night for the first time in months; this became a regular thing for a while, just one in the evening when I was struggling.
Did this make me a bad person?
Did this make my son a bad person for supplying them?

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 22 Mar 2013 14:31

if a child of mine offered me or anybody else drugs in any form
i would be so ashamed

and i would slap their faces :-(

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 22 Mar 2013 14:42

No Carol it didn't make you a bad person because you were desperate, and no it didn't make your son a bad person because he was desperate to help you.

As I don't know the woman and don't know the effect that the joint would have had on her ability to look after the child I can't judge and leave it to Scozz. I don't know what the law is re cannabis in Australia but I think the woman's son should think twice about supplying his mother, at least think about how she would be affected in looking after his child.

PollyinBrum

PollyinBrum Report 22 Mar 2013 14:43

I understand that this drug is used by some people for medicinal reasons and I would not blame them for using it to relieve their pain. Reading the OP this did not seem to be the case. I do not know the woman or her personal circumstances, maybe she herself needs help. However my concern first and foremost would be for the welfare of the child, and I make no apology for that.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 22 Mar 2013 16:05

I fail to see how the grandmother smoking one joint will affect the welfare of the child.
Like wise, a grandmother drinking a glass of wine whilst babysitting is hardly a reason to contact Social Services.

As Ann in Glos has admitted, she doesn't know how a joint would affect the grandmother's ability to look after the baby - neither do I - like any drug, prescription or otherwise, it affects people differently.
I'm sure some of you are permanently on strong painkillers and manage life adequately. I can't take them at all, without very adverse effects, and certainly wouldn't babysit if I HAD to take them.
Because of the effect on me, should I castigate anyone else who takes them and babysits?

Does no-one think this grandmother knows her limits?
