If you would like a step by step guide in plain English of what Rollo is saying (correctly but maybe in Swahili for some) then please PM me and I'll put something together.

Again, thanks Rollo

I have been making a few investigations. The current slowness is down to GRu yet again making a mess of integrating the latest twists and turns in Google Analytics and Ad Tracking. The reason for the changes lie partly with the increasingly popular AdBlock program ( which does not block DoubleClick ).

Some sites are giving up on revenue from web advertising and implementing paywalls eg Murdoch, the Economist, FT, Telegraph. Some are very ez to work around others less so. However there is a pretty finite limit to how many of these subs most people can run to. GRU does not in fact make gadzillions from its ads ( industry sources ) and I for one would prefer a subs only site. For classic members ( no records ) this could be done without any massive increase in subs. Performance would improve no end and encourage a growth in subs.

It is all very well for people to regard a PC ad plug it in and go / if it ain't broke don't fix it. These tend to be exactly the computers full of malware, taken over by botnets and worse.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss but not when running windoze. Those who like fit and forget systems would be well advised to use Apple, both for desktop/laptop and smartphones.

There is a time and place for everything and imho the reading room is not the place for a smart phone or any other kind of phone. I like to read any of Sporting Life, l'Equipe, the FT, MicroMart, TheTimes, Le Monde or El Pais depending on where we are, paper version as I believe in recycling.

Our neighbour's smartphone suffered the same fate he says and now he is pestering me for an old feature phone. He appears to have recovered the SIM card tho' I thankfully have no details.

I am too lazy to sort out the cats cradle of dead and unloved relics so he will have to wait. He should not spend all his spare cash at The Goat and Tricycle.

If the Home Office wants to restore civilisation in the UK then finding some way to deprive the under 30s of mobile phone usage for a period would be more effective than anything else.

Mine has any amount of stuff coming in, not a lot out. I regard it as a non optional item of torture.

In previous times it technologists wore hair shirts and were regarded as saints and heroes e.g. the Venerable Bede, Alan Turing. Now the hair short has been replace by the smart phone and the I.T. guy is regarded as an overpaid and stupid disciple of Beelzebub.

Nah took the sim out and stuck it in my 7 year old slidey phone...as I never worked out how to use the internet on it...it will have to do.

Have seen another one which can be thrown down the toilet, but not sure I want to pay £300 - £400 for it :-D

Edit - I had flushed before I dropped it

Jax, my granddaughter dropped a phone in the bath, the touch screen no longer works. Apparently sealing a water damaged phone in a bag of dried rice for about 5 days may help to get it up and running again.

Back to GR? Sort it! - Is any form of recompense on the cards? I've always been on a basic membership, but I remember receiving some free credits a while back. I think it was because there were quite a few problems with the GR site. Nothing new.
Someone else may have mentioned this already. Apologies for any duplication - I have been struggling to either view or contribute to any threads for a few days.

I only took it in the bathroom on that occasion, as daughter had rung and by the time I got to it she had rang off.....needed to go ...so took it in the bathroom incase she rang back and woke HID up as he has to get up for work at 4am and he may not have been very happy

Edit = I pay £10 a month for 300 mins 3000 texts and 1gb internet which I never use

Recompense in the form of credits would not exactly be a lot of use if you cannot access the site lol

CrystalTips

CrystalTips Report 21 Aug 2013 20:06

Yes, of course eRRol. My fault in assuming that it would eventually get sorted!

How did you acquire and then suddenly lose your air?

I see that you are back on the beach (I posted a link to some photos for you on LG's thread, to confirm for someone else's benefit that sheep do go to the beach) What's that on your head? -struggling to get a signal, or are you off to the races with a fascinator? Ducks in the sea?

I am now a pirate sheep

Hi everyone,

We would like to apologise again for the current site performance. We know that it is running slowly for some of our members. The problem occurred since we released improvements to the site on Monday. Since then our development team have been working tirelessly to fix the issue, but today we have taken to decision to roll back the changes we made one by one so that we can identify what exactly is causing the site to be slow. We are really sorry for any inconvenience caused and will keep you updated with our progress.
