Last Thursday Fred was taken to hospital in an ambulance. I expected to be a orphan by the end of the day.

He is on very strong antibiotics.

There is weather out there that I would not send OH's mother out into.

Guess where Fred is going and what day it is.

With the winds - it must be Flying Sausage Day :-D

Hope that he checked that the sausage sandwich shop is open before braving the storm!

He has had his sausage sandwich and now he is home and having his afternoon rest on the bed.

One of the neighbours was saying that she did not think he should have gone out today and I really can't disagree with her.

Maybe I am carrying out my role of carer in the wrong manner but I consider the decision to be his. I am not in charge of him, he is a grown up and I can't stop him doing whatever he decides he wants to do.

Am I wrong? What do you think?

No you are not wrong Sharron, let Fred live his life as he wants to live it, at his age and after what he has overcome he has earned that, you and his mate are doing a marvellous job - keep up the good work <3

But, am I being irresponsible by not keeping him in when he could be making himself ill by going out?

You see, I don't feel that my job is to make decisions that he can make for himself. Is that part of caring?

Caring for our loved ones young or old is all about recognising that sometimes we have let them go off and do their own thing . You are doing a great job as Fred would probably be the first to say.

YOU and his mate are doing a great job many would let him just sit or lay about all day just keep up the GOOD work its giving him a bit of inderpendace which he needs. xx :-D :-D :-D

Fred obviously knows what he wants. His speech may be difficult, but his brain's obviously active.
Think about it this way - if he hadn't had a stroke, and was living on his own, would he have gone out?
What you are doing is providing him with freedom, the right to have a say in (most) things he does, self respect and dignity (even if this does lead to him cavorting with pineapple toting ladies) :-D

He may be a bit more cavalier in what he does than he used to be, but he's had quite a few years with you since he was sent home to waste away, he's grasping life with both hands and obviously enjoying it.

He's also grown man, and you're letting him behave like one!!! :-D :-D

You cant enforce him to do anything he doesnt wish to do,,,,,,,the only other is encourage him to stay home at times when it will cause you to be concerned about his welfare if you feel his health would suffter,If he still choses his own way then let him be his own boss and be happy in what hes up to.

If he stayed home it could mean you playing snakes and ladders or poker with him......

Oh no,he would just sit in his wheelchair with a face like a smacked bum if I couldn't provide enough washing and washing up to keep him occupied.

He would be forever going over his itinerary, checking that I had booked this and put in the prescription for that.

You ever been nagged by somebody who gets their mucking firds wuddled?

He is not coughing at all now and was sitting in bed filling his gob with wine gums when I came upstairs. Smiling even.

Hm,he might not be smiling when he looks in his other box of wine gums. Well, it has been a bit stressful lately.

if he had no other outlet than his little trips and his gripes he would fade away.......keep him motivated its what makes him tick and have tomorrows to get up for. ;-) :-D

It must be incredibly stressful for you Sharron, keeping him safe but having to let him do daft things, so I don't blame you for snaffling the wine gums,
