I do wish people would post FULL place names on the familysearch site!

A (distant) relative in the US married a man whose mother was born in Wales... her birthplace given as ~

Llaneddy, M Mns, Vcrg, Wales

Can anyone tell me what "M Mns, Vcrg" means, please :-D

I'm fussy about the twigs on my tree :-D

Methodist Minister, Vicarage? Just a guess. I could be completely wrong. I don't know anything about Wales.

LadyScozz Report 30 Mar 2014 05:59

I'm not even sure about Llaneddy....... isn't it Llanedi??

Where are all our Welsh posters?

JustJohn!! Come Out! Come Out! Wherever you are! :-D

I'm going out now, but I'll have a look on googlemaps later :-)

Could Mns mean Monmouthshire?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 30 Mar 2014 10:21

I think Huia is spot on with her interpretation

I'm in Wales by the way :-D

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 30 Mar 2014 10:33

I doubt it.

Do you think a Methodist minister would take his family to Utah & become Mormons?

Some of the siblings have birthplaces as....

Llaney Carmarthenshire, South Wales
Llanelli, Carmarthen, Wales

some just have.... Wales!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 30 Mar 2014 10:47

can you give us the name then? hopefully not Jones :-D

M Mns - Methodist Minister?
Vcrg - Vicarage?

I agree with the place names

My lot are in the main since about 1910 all from London. Great but where in London do other put, nothing.

So it happens all the time all over. And sadly it is our cousins from across the big pond who are often the worst culprits for this.

And anyone who has ever been to the US and sat and chatted with the locals will laugh out loud at their idea of places. We were in Florida, and often went to a local bar rather than sit in the bar in the hotel, got chatting to the staff who were really lovely and very friendly, but they did ask the obvious question when we told them we lived in London about seeing the Queen! Another asked if we knew anyone by the surname of ........ (was something like Smith!). Bless them :-)

I went in a\ store in Philadelphia and when the assistant realised I was Welsh she asked if we had roads over here now :-D :-D

According to my 1868 gazetteer, Llanedy is a parish about 7 miles NE of Llanelly, in Carmarthenshire.

The Calvinist Methodists had a chapel, so perhaps M Mns could be Methodist Minister, BUT, if he went to Utah, it could also be an abbreviation for Mormon Minister, or ? Mormons?

A morman minister with a vicarage in Wales? :-S

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 30 Mar 2014 14:06

Why would he not change religion and go to Utah.

It happened now and it happened then.

Or he could have gone over there to try and save the heathen Mormons!

Not all people in Utah are Mormons. :-D

Google ?

In the 1800's Plenty left these shores looking for an alternative form of religion including Methodist Ministers who became disillusioned with their own form of religion, Utah and Mormonism was one such religion and destination

Hi LadyScozz :-)

Llaneddy now LLANEDI is a village in Carmarthenshire, South Wales. It is halfway(ish) between Llanelli to the South and Ammanford to the North, and near to Llannon.

It was once the name of the Parish of the area.

I was not serious when I suggested Methodist Minister, and Vicarage, they were just the first things that came to mind, and I thought it would keep the thread bumped up for other people to see. Please don't get stuck on the ideas I suggested. :-S

Sounded good to me Huia. Sorry, I didn't see your suggestions until some time after I'd posted.
Would be helpful to know who the lady in question is though.
