Well hello there,

Welcome to my new quest. The Taylor line of my family. OOOHH you're all going to be sorry.

Please jump on board all my friends from the Cyril Dore thread.

KNOWN INFO...name....William Corry Taylor, born... Bulawayo,Rhodesia, Central Africa in 1930.

Father...William C Taylor
Mother...Esther Rainbird
Brothers.... Basil and Ernest
Sister...Stella

Family chat says that he was a descendent of the Voortrekkers.
Dad joined the Royal Navy over there and was shipped here to do his training at HMS Ganges back in god knows when!

I know I'm a pain in the pants, but you can't say I don't set a good challenge

Hi Bob,
Do you know if Wiliam Corry Taylor's parents were UK born? Or where they were born? Do you know when they died?

Hiya Katie,

Nope not a clue haha. And i don't know how to find out either mores the pity, short of getting in touch with the South African Archives somehow, but if you go on over to the Cyril Dore thread all the other girls there will tell you i'm a tight as a ducks botty.......so if it's going to cost me an arm and a leg then i'm afraid poor 'ol dads going to stay at the top of my tree :)) lol

But Katie, if they were Voortrekker decendents, wouldn't they be Dutch origin and his immediate family born around Durban or somewhere like that??

Hi Bob,

Taylor doesn't sound very Voortrekerish! There's probably a UK connection somewhere...but where.

Hi Rob,

Did your dad stay over here?

Did his siblings come over or did all his family remain in S.A. ?

The Voortrekkers (Afrikaans and Dutch for pioneers, literally "those who trek ahead", "fore-trekkers") were emigrants during the 1830s and 1840s who left the Cape Colony (British at the time, but founded by the Dutch) moving into the interior of what is now South Africa. The Great Trek consisted of a number of mass movements under a number of different leaders including Louis Trichardt, Hendrik Potgieter, Sarel Cilliers, Pieter Uys, Gerrit Maritz, Piet Retief, and Andries Pretorius.

Bob,
I don't suppose you know the occupations of William C and Esther. Were Ernest, Basil and Stella older or younger than William?

Robert Report 19 Jan 2011 18:53

Katie,

i think William c and Basil went to work in the copper mines at one stage.

William ( father of William C ) and Esther, think someone mentioned they had a farm.

Doh! sorry, bit of a sketchy past I'm afraid

Robert - I have noticed that sometimes you refer to your Grandfather as William Taylor and sometimes William 'Corry' Taylor, the same as your father.

Which one do you know to be correct please?
