I have found all details until 1903 birth, marriage and births of children Sarah Ann 1898' Thomas 1900' Elizabeth 1903. Then nothing about what happened to them only that my grandmother Elizabeth was adopted.
Would appreciate any info post 1903.
Will share all info I've found prior to 1903 about his father Robert Hastie and family and his father Archibald Hastie from Ireland.

If they remained in Scotland, you need to use Scotlandspeople which is accessed by buying credits.

Thank you for replying :-D
I have found so much about Samuels ancestors on Scotlands People but nothing after 1903.
Thought perhaps a more recent Hastie family member may have some info.
As to what happened to Samuel & Sarah Ann and their children.
Cheers:)

You've said Elizabeth was adopted but that may have been a private arrangement.

Is this Samuel's wife's death please?

Yes yes and yes, thank you so much for this info :) I have seen the 1901 census but the rest is all new to me. May I ask on which site you found these details?
Much obliged to all:)

Scotlandspeople for Sarah Ann's death.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 31 May 2017 22:50

Have you looked at the 1911 census on SP? There's a Thomas Hastie aged 11 and a Sarah Hastie aged 34 on the same page in Elderslie. Sorry don't have credits to check if it's your Thomas and Sarah.

When was Elizabeth adopted and by whom please? Did her surname change when adopted?

Jeanette

Jeanette Report 31 May 2017 22:54

Just got a copy of the registration of Sarah Ann's Death. It is definitely her:) on Scotlands People. I was not putting a late enough date nor the right place.
The story I was told as a child was that my grandma's parents both died in an accident when she was a toddler, that being the reason she was adopted.
Now I have evidence this was not true:(:(
But I know she was loved by her adoptive family <3
I will go to find my past to find out more about Samuel.
Thanks so much for this info :)

Could either of these be the death of Samuel. The first would make a birth year of c1867 and the second c1872. Age only as accurate as person giving the information.

Surname Forename Age at death Year Ref RD Name Image View
HASTIE SAMUEL 46 1913 644/4 1198 Dennistoun

HASTIE SAMUEL 84 1956 655/3 121 Shotts (Western District)

Does Sarah's death certificate note whether she is "wife of" or "widow of" at all ? Might help with time line.

greyghost Report 31 May 2017 23:16

Have you followed through the children to marriage to see if Samuel is noted as deceased?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 1 Jun 2017 08:05

Quite difficult to follow the children as they have fairly common names. When searching SP for deaths you can put in the mother's maiden name to narrow the search but I'm not getting anything for Thomas or Sarah Ann. That's why I was asking if Elizabeth's surname was changed when she was adopted. Thomas and Sarah Ann may have been known by a different surname.

Jeanette, who was the informant on that 1956 death please?

If Elizabeth wasn't adopted by a family member, it may be worth trying to find out if the Poor Relief records for Paisley have survived as they often give quite a bit of information. If it helps, I know that the Poor Relief records for Glasgow are held at the Mitchell Library and are indexed by surname. They are free to search in person.

Jeanette, have you followed the Mary J. Evans and Robert Evans from the 1901 census please? Just wondering if Mary J married and took in Thomas or Sarah? It would help if you gave us all the details from that 1956 death certificate including the parents' names just in case Robert and Mary J returned to England and perhaps the missing niece and nephew followed them.

You probably have this but will post for the benefit of the helpers.

Is this Sarah with her family in 1891 please?

1891 Scotland Census Transcription
Middle Row, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Thomas Evans Head Married Male 43 1848 Coal Miner England
Pisler Evans Wife Married Female 41 1850 - England
Thomas Evans Son Married Male 23 1868 Coal Miner England
William Evans Son Unmarried Male 19 1872 Coal Miner England

Mary Evans Daughter - Female 6 1885 Scholar England
Roset Evans Daughter - Female 4 1887 - England
John Evans Son - Male 1 1890 - Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland

I suspect that Pisler is a mistranscription of Priscilla and there is a death for a Priscilla Evans aged 51 in Paisley.

Was this another child of Samuel and Sarah Ann please? District is the same as the Thomas and Sarah that I've pointed out on the 1911 census.

Ok. I'm pretty sure that this is your Grandma's family in 1911. With 2 more children that you have mentioned. I think you really need to look at that to see if Sarah Ann is married or widowed. That may narrow a death date for Samuel.
