Thank you ArgyllGran and Jude and yes, AustinQ, I think Sarah Ann was a busy lady and perhaps very loving! I just find it sad that Jeanette's Gran seems to be the only child that she "gave away".

Hard to understand why David gave Samuel's address on emigration when Samuel must have known he wasn't David's father. Can't imagine that Sarah Ann and Samuel were still living at the same address in 1927 when Sarah had had at least three children which he didn't father.

I suspect the child Cully on the 1911 census is actually Priscilla. maybe a mistranscription of Cilly- short for Prescilla

In 1920 a Sarah Hastie is listed at 4 Pattison Street, Paisley

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 3 Jun 2017 09:55

Yes, Cully will be a mistranscription of some form of Priscilla.

I can't see anything for Thomas, Mary or Matilda. They just seem to have disappeared.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 3 Jun 2017 10:24

It does seem strange that Elizabeth was not on the 1911 with her family.

Jeanette said her name was not changed- presumably this birth:

ELIZABETH EVANS HASTIE
Born: 1903
Ref: 573/1 171
Paisley

I don't see her on the 1911 census

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Jun 2017 11:23

Perhaps Matilda was also adopted and her name was changed, unlike Elizabeth.

I would have thought Thomas and Mary were too old to have been adopted and their names changed after 1911, but you never know.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 3 Jun 2017 11:32

I think this could be Mary:

Marriage:
Mary Hastie
Spouse: John Birney
Year: 1923
Place: Paisley

Death:
Mary Birney/ Hastie
Age: 30
Year: 1934
Place: Paisley

Yes, I wondered if Matilda had been "adopted" and her name changed. Like you ArgyllGran, Jeanette will be waiting for the release of the 1921 census. Just a shame that the Scottish 1939 register isn't available online like the English one.

That looks quite hopeful AustinQ :-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Jun 2017 11:53

Just a vague possibility for a child of Mary & John Birnie - absolutely no proof without the birth cert - and we don't know for sure if she's the right Mary:

Birth:

BIRNIE
BARBARA WALLACE
F
1926
573/1 1112
Paisley

Death:

BIRNIE
BARBARA WALLACE
69
1992
314/ 92

Wondered about this David too:

Our David was born 3rd September 1911- birth on 1939 register is 30th September 1911. He seems to appear there for just the one year- don't see a death for him.

27 Copeley Hill , Birmingham C.B., Warwickshire, England

David Hastie 30 Sep 1911 Male Iron Foundry Wood Metal Single
Moffat Dyer 06 Jan 1917 Male Wood & Metal Pattern Maker Single
David Forrester 31 May 1884 Male General Iron Moulder Heavy Worker Married

Jeanette will have to invest in certificates to verify or disprove AQ's suggested marriages for Mary and Thomas.

David's a niggling mystery! If he came back from Canada, there's no obvious record of it.
There were only 3 David Hasties born in Scotland in 1911-12, and one in England (Hexham - 1st qr 1911, so that shouldn't be him in 1939) - so there's a 33.3333. . . . % chance of that being "our" David in 1939!

Assuming he did come back from Canada, there's this death:

David Hastie
in the UK and Ireland, Find A Grave Index, 1300s-Current
Name: David Hastie
Birth Date: 1911
Death Date: 6 Jul 1984
Cemetery: Bent Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place: Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland
Has Bio?: N
Spouse: Mary L. Hastie

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Jun 2017 14:56

No, that's not Jeanette's David's death:

This is the marriage of that one:

HASTIE
DAVID CHASSELLS
MACKIE
MARY LINDSAY
1939
647/ 313
313
Hamilton

Can't see the birth of that particular David, though.
