Thinking aloud again:

Could Jean 1933 have been in Children's home, as your Dad?

Did you said that Dad was in a home in Greenwich? Jean was born in Mottingham, which borders the Greenwich borough. Were you able to get any info from Shaftesbury homes?

Maybe Jean went to the home before your Dad but being 9 years older she might have left before him. Hope that makes sense.

Or, she went with Dad, Herber Sloper.

Patricia could have been the daughter of Mr Shipton, sounds like he was on the scene give or take a couple of years.

Hi Selena

It was confirmed that dad didnt go to a childrens home in Greenwich is was infact Shaftesbury Homes. I am still waiting to hear back from them. The lady I spoke to did say she would get back to me in two weeks. It has only been a week so fingers crossed that I hear from her soon.

I would still say that Dorothea was married to Shipton as Shipton is on the marriage certificate to Arther Knight. But then again we cant seem to find any record of a marriage.

WiIl this saga ever end?LOL

Sorry Dionne, maybe I'm losing the plot a bit.

Where abouts was the Shaftesbury Home that Dad was in? Just trying to tie some places together.

Hope the lady you spoke to hurries up!

Thankyou Joy and please thank Tania for me.
It is nice to finally have one loose end tied up.It is also sad to know that my father did indeed have a sister that only died a few years ago.
I would love to know how Tania managed to find this information.I have been searching for ages.lol
Many thanks

Jeans marriage was listed as Ann J Sloper
I had taken a note of it as it was the right age group for Jean (girls in the 50s usually married between age 18 and 21) and the same area that Herbert Sloper had gone too, then when I found the death in the same area with the correct names and married name and date of birth It all tied together and I realised it was indeed her marriage entry.

Good Morning all.

Thank you so much for the continued information that you are all gathering for me.

I sat down with my father today and went through the certificates and information I have gained.

After weighing everything up we have come to the conclusion that Herbert was indeed my dad’s father although the fathers name was left blank on the certificate. At around the time of my fathers birth it strongly looked liked Dorothea was having an affair with Shipton. My father came along and Herbert couldn’t be 100% sure that my father was his son. He must have been a decent man because he took his daughter Jean Ann to Newport with him. If he was 100% certain that my father was his son I believe he would have taken him also.

My father remembers Shipton as being a nasty violent man who was always going for my father. He thinks this was because Shipton knew he wasn’t his son and I to have to agree. I think Dorothea knew Herbert was the father and this is why she gave my father the name Herbert.

She continued to have children in her marriage with Herbert and later on in life. All girls were adopted apart from Jean. My father being the only boy was kept. Was Dorothea using him as part of her game? I think so.

My father seems happy now he has some knowledge of his family. He can now recall Constance (Dorothea’s sister) being very kind to him and looking after him from time to time. He thinks this is why there must have been some jealousy from Joyce his sister.

I am now trying to find information on the Grange Lodge attached to Fairy Hall and thank you for the information given.

There are now only two more things needed to try and complete this story.

A possible marriage certificate for Dorothea to Shipton
Possible siblings of Jean Ann and her husband.

Many thanks for your continued help and support
Dionne and her Dad

Just re read my posting and saw the mistakes. I meant to say Dorothea knew Herbert was my dads father so gave him the name Sloper (not Herbert)
Jealousy from Joyce his cousin (not sister)
sorry

Do you mean children not siblings?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 19 Oct 2007 14:49

Remind me, when did Dorothea marry Mr Sloper?

Dionne

Dionne Report 19 Oct 2007 14:56

Hi Wayne

Sorry for the confusion.I have only been out of hospital for a few days and am still quite tired.

Dorothea married Sloper in 1930.
Yes I did mean children and not siblings.

Thanks

Thanks Wayne .

I have managed to find some great pictures of The Grange in Mottingham.

I am going to try and find photos of the areas my father can remember living in to put into an album with all the certificates and information gained. This I will look for at a later date as I would like to concentrate on trying to find Children of Jean Ann Sloper and her husband if she had any.
I did manage to find the marriage and death of Jean as did JoyDean from this site. But I cant find anything alse yet.

As always all help is greatfully received.

Dionne, I shall find the thread that Tania posted saying that she was not renewing membership, so that you can contact her directly. She and I are in each other's contacts on GR and are in contact through face book. I have been happy to pass on her findings to you.
