Jonesey Report 27 Nov 2010 22:02

Ginny, avert your eyes.

I have just been catching up on the latest gossip and noted the bits about pork. Some years ago together with a group of good friends we started having a barbecue on every May bank holiday. We started with the usual sort of barbecue fayre, burgers, sausages, bits of steak ect but as the years rolled on and our children began to grow we became more adventurous. Eventually someone suggested that we roast a whole pig so we made a frame with a spit which was to be placed over two fairly large barbecue trays which would hold the charcoal.

As my shop had a butchers shop a couple of doors away I said that I would organise obtaining the pig. I made initial enquiries and the butcher said no problem as he had a delivery of pig carcasses from his wholesaler every Thursday and he would contact me when they arrived so that I could select one. He duly sent his lad to let me know they were in and I went to his shop. When I arrived the first thing that he said was "How big a pig do you want" and was somewhat taken aback when I replied no bigger than 4' 6". When he said "What!" I had to explain that was the length of the spit that we had made, any bigger and we couldn't turn the spit.

We started cooking it at about 1:00pm and numerous bags of charcoal, bottles of wine and many hours later we began to eat it. Very nice it was too but we were all so hungry and drunk by then that we probably would have said anything tasted good.
