Linda Report 5 Dec 2008 01:12

Hi Michelle,
can I take up your offer to look up incoming passenger lists please? My mother and her parents travelled back to England from Peru and Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s, but I don't know how many times or on what ships. My mother was Elizabeth Louise Davis (known as Betty), born 30th Nov 1923. Her parents were Ernest Richard (Dick) Davis, possibly listed as Captain Davis, and Lizzie Alberta (Bertie) Davis. I have a list of my grandfather's employment record with the Western Telegraph Company from 1913 to March 1931 - he served on various cableships. This says that he left on leave on 3rd Aug 1918, arrived Rio 9th Aug, left Rio 25th Aug, arrived England 4th Oct 1918. He was also on leave from 1st Jan 1919 and left England 8th March 1919, and again left his ship on 19th April 1922, arrived England 19th May 1922. He and my grandmother were married 11th Feb 1922 in Peru, and there is a note that the company paid cost of wife's passage home and out in 1922. I think that would have been from Callao (Peru). He was on leave again from 23rd Jan 1926, arrived England 20th Feb 1926. On this occasion they travelled on the RMS Ortega, as I have 2 menu cards, and I assume my mother was with them - the staff log says that the company paid wife and child's fare England to Pernambuco (Brazil) and got a refund for unused portion Callao-England. Not quite sure what this means in terms of where they travelled from and to! There is a further note that my grandfather was on leave Feb 1930. I also know that my mother was sent home to boarding school when she was 8, while her mother accompanied her father round the world on his cableship, so I'm not even sure if her mother escorted her home before she disappeared for 3 years! That would have been in 1931 or 1932. I presume my grandparents, or at least my grandmother, reappeared in 1934 or 1935. My grandfather continued serving on cableships during the war, and presumably came home on leave occasionally, so he might turn up on passenger lists 1939-45. I was also told that on one of his voyages the ship was torpedoed and he spent 2 days in an open boat, but I have no more details and don't know if he was travelling to or from England on this occasion.

If you can find any information at all I'd be most grateful, especially as to which ships they travelled on.
very many thanks, Linda

Hi Michelle,
that's brilliant, thank you so much. The last 3 are him as his birthdate (sorry - forgot to give you that before!) was 4th Feb 1889. Interesting that my grandmother (born 2nd June 1894) was down as Elizabeth on the first list as she was actually christened Lizzie (much to her father's disgust apparently - he was away at sea at the time!) I didn't know he went to Halifax, N.S., but that's definitely him as the address is right. I have a lot of letters that he wrote to both his wife and my Mum during the war, but of course he wasn't allowed to say where he was. Interesting that he has a slightly older namesake! And yes, he was a busy man. I think he must have gone all over the world.
cheers, Linda

Wow, that's fantastic! Thank you so much. I never knew he sailed on the Andes - I was in the Sea Rangers in Bristol and we were named S.R.S. (= Sea Ranger Ship) Andes. I've still got the hat! I was in Southampton at university when the Andes sailed out on her final voyage - heard her hooters from the library and have always regretted not going down to the docks to see her go. Interesting - we think world travel has opened up with planes, but there have always been mariners spending much of their lives going round the world.
cheers, Linda

Hi Michelle,
I am trying to unravel a William Rogers knot!
1 William Rogers baptised Green Norton 1826 son of THomas and Francis
2, William Rogers baptised Greens Norton 1826 illegitimate son of Mary.
One William died age 6 Greens Norton 1833. One William married in 1850 ( no fathers name on marriage cert!
3 William Rogers baptised 1827 Alderton (next village to Greens Norton)
The William I am trying to track married in 1850, other relations have done a tree looking as though our William had the father Thomas and mother Francis but I think it is more likely to be the illegitimate one. Another family member has tracked back the Alderton William but 'my' William has Greens Norton as his place of birth in later censuses. Where were any of these Williams in 1841, Can you find them. Another researcher told me some time ago that they were not in Greens Norton. I don't even know if finding them in 1841 would give me any more clues but maybe! Can you find anything?? At least one William survived to have been married in 1850 but which one??
Thanks
Chris

PS Both villages in Northamptonshire!

this man i have seen on later census records and remained at 1831 birthyear.1841 can be out on birthyears so this is why i thought i would look for this 1.
The other William on the 1841 around birthyear of yours is the Alderton 1 who i have counted out also.
I wonder if your William who you think had the mother Mary-maybe she married and is hiding on the 1841 under her married name which William is showing under also? They could though be simply missing-1841 was not the most accurate census!
