Hi David

I would have said going by the profession of John on previous census's this one is your man!

1861 RG number: RG09 Piece: 3821 Folio: 16 Page: 26
Reg. District: Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Sub District: 2 St Andrew
Address: 32, Pilgrim Street, St Andrews, Newcastle Upon Tyne County: Northumberland
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATKINSON, Joseph Head Married M 41 1820 Waterman Northumberland
ATKINSON, Alice Wife Married F 50 1811 Durham Preston
ATKINSON, John Son Unmarried M 18 1843 Waterman Newcastle upon Tyne

Let me know what you think?

Being a Waterman was an official recognised job and i believe there are directories somewhere.

I shall see what the newspapers bring up.

It's at this stage my tree is a confusion, because I had Joseph as Father earlier without proof, then I found William in a census that seemed the more probable.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 May 2010 21:23

Ok, why did William seem more probable?

Do you know when the marriage of John and Mary Ann was?

T x

David

David Report 21 May 2010 21:28

Ive got 1867 but I don't recall the source of that info

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 May 2010 21:36

I would suggest you need to order this marriage cert...

Marriages Jun 1867
ATKINSON John Newcastle T. 10b 31
Scott Mary Ann Newcastle T. 10b 31

....as we know Mary Ann's name was Scott, this will show whom John's father was.

I have a sneaky idea it's Joseph.

Without the cert the guessing game is too much!

Ok the address on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census are as follows.

1881 - Morrison Street
1871 - Bermondsey Street
1861 - Pilgrim Street.

All 3 address are by the river and are only 3 miles apart. There is most def an arguement that Joseph is Thomas's father. You do need that cert to be certain tho.

David

David Report 21 May 2010 21:47

I will do that Tracey. My tree's pedigree was ok while there was certificates to prove the lineage.

Going back 4 generations has been very interesting.

On my Father's side of the tree GGFather could'nt write as is evidenced in the Census of Ireland 1911
What a pity so many records were lost.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 May 2010 21:50

I know, it's also a pity we never had the thought of mind to ask all the questions your gonna need earlier in life when the elders were around to answer them!

David

David Report 21 May 2010 21:58

I couldn't agree more Tracey
I hardly knew anything about my parents parents until I lost them both and eventually joined GR

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 May 2010 22:04

Get that marriage cert and drop me a line with the answers.... and we can meet back here and persue it more.

I am trying to see if i can see their marriage online and get the data without getting the cert, but cannot find any parish records online at the min.

So get ordering.... !!

You lot are good at this.
I thank you all for your help.
Will I still need the certificate as proof?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 22 May 2010 10:30

Yeah you should get the paper proof...

OK, so we now know the 1861 is right. I shall hunt them on the 1851 census.

Tracey x

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 22 May 2010 10:45

I cannot currently find them on the 1851, i haven't given up yet!

I have looked at this tho....

JOSEPH ATKINSON
Christening: 01 FEB 1820 Saint Nicholas, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England
Father: GEORGE ATKINSON
Mother: MARY

JOSEPH ATKINSON
Christening: 23 JAN 1821 Saint Nicholas, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England
Father: GEORGE ATKINSON
Mother: MARY

It seems it's possible St Nicholas church was their church, i would suggest Joseph's father is George. This looks as tho they have lost their first son and then had another giving him the same name.

I shall of course endeavour to prove this!

Joseph and Alice are both listed as not being from the county, and Joseph is a Waterman, so these are def yours!
